Sidewalk Facility Gap

As noted by others Tri-Met is the method for high schoolers to get to school. This is also the bus route for commuters. The only signalized crossings are at Canyon Lane and at 87th Avenue. That is approximately 1 mile. For anyone who lives on either side of Canyon Road there is no direct connection to either stop location. This assumes that a pedestrian uses the closest stop on Canyon Road to go either to or come from downtown and therefore does not cross Canyon on one leg. In other words, regardless of where one lives Canyon Road has to be crossed. With a one mile separation it is unreasonable to assume pedestrians will walk a minimum of 1/2 a mile. That would assume they are walking along the Canyon Road shoulder. The distance is much higher if they stay off of Canyon Road. Accessibility / mobility is shot. The Copel Road location is a good start to improve access by adding a pedestrian enhancement. Traffic signal warrants (i.e. the pedestrian warrant) should not be a consideration as the required pedestrian volumes are only valid generally near a school or in an extremely urbanized area. An RRFB should be installed at this location, ideally along with a raised center median, to promote pedestrian (and dismounted cyclist) crossings. The best example would be the RRFB along Barbur Boulevard between Hamilton St and Capitol Highway. there are a lot of similarities between the two sites.
