The freeway on and off ramps at Highway 101 and San Luis Bay Drive are dangerous for bicyclists. Southbound cyclists on Ontario Road trying to either cross San Luis Bay Drive or turn left (eastbound) toward Monte Road often face heavy and aggressive motorists making right turns onto San Luis Bay Drive. Cyclists heading eastbound on San Luis Bay Drive face the same situation while trying to turn left (northbound) on Ontario Road. The solution may be a stop light or stop signs.

The freeway on- and off-ramps at Avila Beach Drive and Shell Beach Road are dangerous for bicyclists. One solution would be a signal or stop signs on Avila Beach Drive. If you are a northbound cyclist on Shell Beach Road trying to turn left (west) on Avila Beach Drive, heavy and aggressive traffic make this maneuver difficult. The situation is the same for cyclists heading southbound on Monte Road then trying to turn left on Shell Beach Road.

the Atascadero/Templeton connector needs to be completed soon.

  4. July 06 2013

Pismo Beach, southbound Mattie Road at Price Street, both frontage roads frequented by bicyclists. The signal does not change for bicyclists trying to make a left onto Price Street. I have waited several minutes for a motorist to trigger the signal, I have run the light out of frustration and I have moved to the right to push the pedestrian button, which puts me on the wrong side of the road to make a left. This signal needs to be bicycle sensitive!

In general, Highway 101 is a barrier to bicyclists in San Luis Obispo. The Marsh Street access to the bike trail on the Madonna Inn property is dangerous as is the trail's end at Madonna Road. The access at both ends should be redesigned to accommodate all levels of bicyclists, including families with children. Bicyclists need to be part of the discussion on how to fix these inconvenient and intimidating access points. I support a bicycle/pedestrian bridge to connect Broad Street and the bike bridge over Highway 101 at California Boulevard. I also support the proposed new interchange at Los Osos Valley Road that will provide safe and convenient bicycle and pedestrian access rather than the current facility that requires bicyclists to dodge distracted and aggressive motorists. Los Osos Valley Road by the big box stores needs to be improved for bicycling. And lower Higuera from Tank Farm Road to Ontario needs to be redesigned and much of it needs resurfacing to accommodate bicyclists. The bridge south of the Octagon Barn needs widening. Ontario Road also needs to be resurfaced.

For bicyclists, the access to Highway 101 and Cuesta Grade in San Luis Obispo is poor. Northbound, bicyclists access 101 via a dirt path at the north end of San Luis Drive or via Monterey Street. Southbound, bicyclists must exit at Monterey Street. There used to be a southbound bicycle exit north of Cuesta Park, but the gate was closed. It needs to be reopened or a new safe and convenient exit for bicyclists provided.

Highway 41 between Atascadero and Santa Margarita. The signs at the freeway onramps indicate bicyclists and pedestrians are prohibited, but there is no signage that indicates where there is access across the freeway. For example, at the intersection of San Gabriel Road and the frontage road parallel to the westbound lanes, I turned south until being blocked by the freeway on-ramp that said I was prohibited. I had to ride north until I found a crossing of Highway 101 and then rode El Camino Real to Santa Margarita and the onramp that allows bicyclists. Also, the overcrossings and intersections need to be brought up to today's standards for bicyclists and pedestrians.

  8. July 06 2013

This is a general comment that Highway 41, including the access at Highway 101 in Atascadero, needs to be improved for bicycling. Highway 41 is so substandard that it is dangerous for bicycling. Highway 41 should accommodate all users, not just motorists.

Cuesta Grade. I am a bicyclist and often pedal over the grade, sometimes on Old Stagecoach Road for the northbound trip. When I take Old Stagecoach, it's risky to cross over to the northbound shoulder/ bicycle lane at the summit because the southbound traffic is so fast and sight distance is poor. Southbound, the alternative bicycle route below the summit does not meet minimum standards. It is comprised of a culvert with loose dirt and sleep and slippery slopes. The old concrete road has large cracks. It's wonderful to have this alternative route, but it needs to be improved so it's safe. I crashed my bicycle on the steep downhill dirt slope on July 4. Luckily, I only suffered road rash. You should discuss possible improvements with bicyclists.

Miossi Rd. was closed to public access approx. 2 years ago. This was exit that most southbound 101 bicyclists used instead of the required Monterey St. exit. I would like to see this route or another be opened to bicyclists again as the Monterey exit is much more challenging for bicyclists. This gets cyclists off the highway sooner and most importantly, prior to the highway curves where sight distance is limited and the shoulder seems smaller with a guard rail and then a retaining wall next to it.

Please follow through with a planned bikeway facility (Class I) connecting Orcutt Road and Tank Farm

  12. June 29 2013

Would like to see vehicle free zones within the City limits. Allows for greater movement of pedestrians in a safe environment.

  13. June 26 2013

Improve the old bridge and allow bicycles to freely bike across the bridge.

  14. June 26 2013

People will park in bike lane on southbound side of Hwy 1. Long term fix is need parking here for cars and short term fix is to install "no parking" signs and police enforcement.

  15. June 13 2013

Main Street between 8th and Vineyard
The street narrows considerably in this section of Main Street, with no shoulder or hard surface walkway, making it difficult for pedestrians/bicyclists to traverse safely. Unfortunately, this is the area where three schools (elementary, middle and high schools) are located. This area had been noted as a concern and possible project in the Safe Routes to School program, which I understand has been discontinued.

It would be great to have a bicycle path on this 1-mile stretch of Highway 101, to connect Atascadero and Templeton. That would greatly improve the bike-friendliness of north county!!!

  17. May 10 2013

bike lanes need to have more of interface with transportations facilities

  18. May 10 2013

need more bike lanes in Grover Beach

  19. May 06 2013

Where Mattie rd dead ends could be a great extension to a bike path that will parallel the 101. There is a straw field/ hay field at the end of Mattie rd. Maybe talk to the owners and work out a deal to purchase a small amount of the land closer to the freeway that won't interfere with there farming.

The Hwy 1 bridge across the Santa Maria River is unpleasantly narrow. Unless it will be rebuilt with much wider shoulders in the near future, a separate bike/ped path parallel to it should be considered. The river flows so rarely that even a path that received seasonal flooding would be better than nothing.

  21. May 05 2013

Will there be a bikepath paralleling 101 across the Santa Maria River once the bridge reconstruction is done?
The alternatives are OK for someone on a leisure ride but too time consuming for bike commuters.

  22. May 05 2013

This bike route is narrow enough and has enough traffic to be unpleasant and semi-dangerous for cyclists -- particularly those headed uphill (southbound). I realize solutions would not be easy because of terrain and property acquisition but maybe the road could be widened in some places at least.

  23. May 05 2013

Price Canyon Rd. is the most efficient way for cyclists o get from the 5-Cities area to SLO and back. Unfortunately, the section from Corral de Piedra Rd. to Ormonde Road is too narrow and has too much traffic for most cyclists. Widening the road just 3 feet would make a huge difference. The worst sections are the "uphill" sections and the northernmost road cut.

  24. May 05 2013

get Anza Trail through PXP Oil class one multi purpose... horses, bikes, peds. this is an alternate to 101 corridor route for bike commuters between south county and SLO. Lots of equestrians in this area... lots of horses. It sure would be fun to be able to ride a horse to the beach.

  25. May 05 2013

Anza Trail here somehow... connect Pismo to Oceano... and all the way down to county line ultimately... class one bike path/multi use trail... horses... peds bikes... maybe even electric bikes.
