The bus stop on the SW corner of 8th and K NE should be moved to the SE corner. Its current location is in front of residences where the SE corner is a community/neighbor maintained flower garden. Significant trash accumulates daily in front of and on residents' property near the bus stop. To begin, any city resources available to address and clean up litter needs to be considered. But if the bus stop is relocated to the SE corner, it will be a significant benefit to the residents dealing with the noise of bus riders and the buses themselves, and the accompanying litter. Frankly, the bus stop just makes more sense on the SE corner.

This small slice of WV Ave encourages truck and bus traffic on K St NE as a link between the NoMa/Mt Vernon Sq/Downtown area to other NE locations (Ivy City, NY Ave, etc). K St NE is a residential location - truck and bus traffic is extremely loud and dangerous. Recommend closing WV Ave from 8th St NE to K St NE and prohibiting trucks on K St NE. Additional "triangle park" open space will be created.

The fence that surrounds Gallaudet University is killing walkability in the area. Residents of Trinidad who want to use Union Market (not just the new, trendy part, but also the old, cheap part that sells more practical groceries) have to walk all the way down to Florida and then up into the industrial zone of the market. Integrating this beautiful campus into the neighborhood would go a long way to deepening the recent developments in Trinidad. The neighborhood is already bounded to the North by Mt. Olivet Cemetery, East by Bladensburg Road, the horrible Starburst Intersection and Benning Road to the South, and the campus does nothing to integrate institutional space with community space. The border roads to Trinidad give a clear message to motorists, "There's nothing to see here. Continue on." And that's what they do.

This stretch does not deserve four traffic lights. To me it makes more sense to have lights at 4th and 6th only and have 3rd and 5th deadend.

  5. July 31 2013

This may be the most dangerous and frustrating intersection in town for a cyclist. This is a perfect place for a large roundabout with a park in the middle. And NY Ave. through traffic should travel under the roundabout through a tunnel.

24 hour on-street parking on the north and south side of Florida Avenue is VITAL for safety and residential needs. Eliminate "no-rush hour 7-9:30 parking"...it is unnecessary for easement traffic flow in this block of Florida and encourages highway-like speeds. Integration of a bike lane can be included in the dedication of this lane.

  7. July 21 2013

6th street north of Florida is too wide wiithout lane markings to make clear that it is only a two lane road at this point. There should be safer and more inviting pedestrian access to Union Market for Gallaudet campus, NoMa metro stop on M street, and residents who live south of Florida Ave.

  8. July 21 2013

The street scape of Florida Ave NE from 6th to the railroad tracks could be improved with tree plantings, median greenway, fewer lanes, broader sidewalks, etc.

  9. July 21 2013

This part of Florida Ave NE should have fewer car lanes, better sidewalks (esp. on south side) and nicer streetscape.

  10. July 21 2013

Very dangerous for pedestrians walking along south side of Florida Ave, the sidewalk is too narrow, and has obstructions in the middle of the sidewalk, including streetlights and porch steps to houses.

  11. July 21 2013

Stop signs on 7th street at Morton Place and L street are not very visible to drivers. The signs are not tall and can be obscured by parked cars and tree cover. It would be helpful if white lines came all the way across road and had "STOP" painted for drivers on the roadway.

  12. July 21 2013

Sidewalk at bus stop in front of Chinitos Burritos is not wide enough.

Also, crossing 7th Ave feels dangerous due to angle of street as cars turning south on 7th from Florida Ave cannot see easily around corner.

Hello, I am the manager of Trilogy NoMa apartments. Our residents must cross the busy Florida Ave./NY Ave. intersection to get to the metro. It would be great if there was an easement on the Pepco land to allow residents to cut over on the MBT and avoid the street traffic without having to backtrack to R street to enter the trail.

I have lived on Florida Ave.NE since the early 1980s after over10 years in.NW. N E has been HELL ! Where is any kind of citizens support org.?????

  15. June 22 2013

Is it possible to get a new circulator route (or maybe a street car?) to service West Virginia Ave through the NoMA metro? For those of us who are unable to ride bikes or are not bike enthusist, the walk to the NoMa station is a hike and it doesn't really make since to walk to the 90/92 stop on Florida and 8th. West Virginia Ave is wide enough to accomodate buses and adding service will help with traffic calming.

I live on Montello Ave within the study area and the Florida/12th/K/Montello intersection is a mess for pedestrians, particularly crossing in the north/south direction on the west side of the street. These crossing times are short and the 3 separate lights never sync up for pedestrians. This leads to a lot of jay walking for pedestrians who don't want to wait through 3 lights to cross at this dangerous intersection. Fix the light timing to make this intersection more pedestrian friendly - and add bike lanes, wider sidewalks, and parking on Florida Ave to slow down traffic and allow people to walk or bike safely.

  17. June 20 2013

Stop sign needed at WV Ave and 8th intersection prior to traffic light.

  18. June 20 2013

Widen sidewalks along Bladensburg Road NE, often tooo narrow due to trees. More street lighting needed. Remove commercial parking restrictions

  19. June 20 2013

Remove the Eastward do not enter sign on 1400 blk Morse.

  20. June 20 2013

4th st better one way and do not enter signs, signs should be lower. 5th street same. 300blk Morse needs signage and parking markers

  21. June 19 2013

The intersection of New York Ave NE and Florida Ave NE is extremely dangerous, especially with all of the ongoing construction. There is no should or space for a cyclist to safely travel, and with the open joints on the road, its extremely dangerous. Driving on the road at time, I'd even say it's dangerous for drivers because of the construction and traffic. Since the construction is lasting so long, a safe passageway for pedestrians and cyclists should be established, or a clear detour should be determined and marked. Even before the construction started though, with no bike lane or shoulder, it was almost impossible to bike along Florida and get through this intersection without getting almost hit every time by a car or two. A clearly marked bike lane is needed here.

  22. June 19 2013

If losing street parking to bike lanes is an overarching concern on the stretch of West Virginia Ave. NE between K St. and Mt. Olivet Rd., we'd like to see DDOT *seriously* consider sharrows from K to Mt. Olivet, transitioning into dedicated bike lanes from Mt. Olivet to NY Ave. (there's more than enough ROW north of Mt. Olivet on West Virginia Ave., and the need for traffic calming for the entirety of West Virginia - a signed bike route - is evident).

Concerning traffic calming generally along the entire stretch, we are in desperate need of some traffic control(s) between Florida and Mt. Olivet Rd., ie.: http://greatergreaterwashington.org/post/10427/whats-the-longest-street-in-dc-with-no-traffic-control/

  23. June 19 2013

A two way cycle track will be much safer than bike lanes for a beginner cyclist and encourage more people in the area to bike.

  24. June 18 2013

This intersection is treacherous. Not all traffic entering this intersection has a stop sign, which is dangerous for cyclists and cars going east on L Street. More stop signs or (even better) lights would improve this section.

  25. June 18 2013

I agree with the other commenters that a bike lane along West Virginia Ave would be a wonderful improvement for both pedestrians and bikes (and the drivers would appreciate as well since it would create more
    order along the road)
