I live at 1027 Florida Avenue, NE and I speak for a group of concerned citizens..

We want 24/7 residential parking on both sides of Florida. It will slow traffic, protect the homes and be safer.

Coming home any late evening, I often park at least two blocks from my house and walk home, often alone, in the dark, when the entire street in front of my house is empty. This is an unnecessary risk and inconvenience.

FYI-No one goes 25 miles/hour. This is an almost entirely residential street and we're being treated like a highway-even after a fatal hit and run. There are families with children all around here and the church across the street has many kids' programs.

    It's unnecessarily unsafe.

I am chairman of the Florida Avenue, NE Citizens Committee for Safety. We are delighted that a light is going in at 10th and Florida but we want PARKING. If we don't get a commitment from the city soon, we will have a series of "park in" demonstrations to take our point.

I'm happy to talk with anyone at any time about these issues.

Repeal current "No parking from 7-9:30am" and allow for zoned 24/7 street parking along this 99% residential street. Will prevent the need for widening sidewalks, slightly calm the extreme speeds along this stretch, and provide much needed parking for this growing area.

Install a sidewalk on the other side (the Gallaudet side) of W Virginia Avenue. Currently, the narrow path on one side of the street has to accommodate foot traffic in two directions as well as bike traffic when the road is busy and too unsafe for bicycles.

Place recessed LED flashers into the road to alert drivers that a pedestrian wishes to cross. Pedestrian would be responsible for pressing the cross request.

The traffic signal timing at Maryland/Morse intersection needs to match the timing of traffic signal for Maryland Ave traffic to get on Bladensburg-- when Maryland (northbound) get a greenlight, but then are suddenly stopped by a red light at that intersection (MD/Morse) and usually results in a traffic jam that blocks the Benning/H/Florida east-west traffic in the traffic box.

  6. June 10 2013

Too often the cars on 15th don't understand that they are SUPPOSED to stay straightforward onto Bladensburg Road. Can it be more lined up with Bladensburg?

  7. June 10 2013

Need a special, dedicated, turn lane for New York Ave traffic who wish to turn right onto Florida Ave-- due to the fact that the Florida Ave traffic doesn't give breaks/gaps for the NY traffic to turn into.

  8. June 10 2013

The zebra crosswalk and a bright yellow "Yield to Pedestrians" in middle of the street of 6th Street NE is NOT enough to slow down the cars to yield to pedestrians. I gamble my life every time I cross that street for Union Market from Gallaudet University because most of times the cars go at least 45-60 mph. Speed bumps and a button to light-up the crosswalk to alert the incoming cars that THERE ARE PEDESTRIANS are some ideas to slow down the traffic.

  9. June 10 2013

Please put in a protected bike lane for West Virginia Ave. This road is designated as a bike route, but the cars go very fast on this road and there is not enough room for bikes. It is a very unsafe bike route and I would not bike there.

  10. June 10 2013

Please put in a protected bike lane. Many bikes have to bike on the sidewalk where there are a lot of deaf and hard-of-hearing pedestrians. This is not a safe situation.

  11. June 10 2013

Please widen sidewalks on both sides of this road. This stretch of road is frequently used by deaf people who walk side-by-side in twos and threes. ON the southbound side there is barely any room to walk two-by-side. For this part of Florida Ave, the sidewalks should be almost as wide as the ones you see in downtown DC.

The WV/FL intersection is a mess. There are 5 roads that intersect at pretty much the same place (L, 9, 10, FL, & WV). At a minimum, I would suggest making WV dead end at FL instead of crossing it. Then, you could either join the two existing triangular parks together to make one larger one or creat a circle or even semi-circle to slow and manage all the directions of traffic.

  13. June 05 2013

The sidewalk on the south side of Florida Ave between M St and 9th St is extremely narrow and dangerous for pedestrians. The sidewalk here should be expanded to allow pedestrians to walk safely.

  14. June 05 2013

It is very difficult to cross the street right here. Often the lights overlap, so there is never a safe time to cross the street.
