If 5th street bicycle blvd. option is adopted this intersection will be critical

If a 3rd street bicycle blvd is adopted, this can be a short continuation, providing easy entrance from Bonita traveling East Bound. However, Westbound cyclists are faced with a non controlled crossing of Bonita

5th Street Bicycle Blvd. - Bonita alternative option. Use of 5th street to provide an alternative to Bonita is periodically suggested. This is possible, although with its own set of challenges. It should not be considered a replacement for the need to accommodate cyclists on Bonita, which has high use, and is published as a route both regionally and nationally. However, it does have the potential to create an attractive alternative, especially to casual, timid, less experienced users, removing them from Bonita, and growing overall car-free travel within the area. Its effectiveness at doing so will directly correlate with the quality of the bicycle blvd.

School Zone / Safe Routes to school. Direct area around school should have clear delineation for vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles. Safe routes to the school should be designated and signed for students attending the school.

As this area converts to Transit Oriented Develop ensure streets go beyond the minimum human design accommodations to support bicycle and pedestrian use. This should include low vehicle speeds, wide sidewalks, and an environment conducive to bicycle/bike share travel.

Remove posts withing bicycle flow, and place bicycle symbols for West and East flow. AllowsGrove to function as a parallel route alternative to Foothill. Vehicles continued to be prevented from through travel.

Convert current edge lines / horizontal line pattern to Class II lanes with buffering. If vehicles attempting to use lanes to make right turns is a problem, then enhance with low-cost physical controls such as heavy dots, flex posts,or flexible bollards.

Current Class II - Needs improvement. Green highlighting and hashing are warranted at shopping center busy entrance/exits (Target / State Brothers). Buffering should be added on the curves where visibility is constrained, roadwith is wide, and vehicle speeds are high.

    General Foothill Blvd Comment.
It is recognized that Foothill is under Cal Trans control, and carries heavy vehicle traffic. While few recreational riders use Foothill, it has the highest number of bicycle related collisions within La Verne, indicating high use by recreational, marginalized and student bicyclists. While significant change on Foothill is not likely possible in the near term, special attention should be given to ensure the Foothill businesses can be reached by parallel routes and frequent North / South connectors. This will reduce the need for users to travel on Foothill itself, typically on very dangerous sidewalk conditions. Long term work with Caltrans to improve. Upland and Claremont both have reconfigured Foothill, leaving La Verne lagging.

Common route for cyclist to access Foothill business, and flow through up to Emerald for access to North La Verne. Use green highlighting to delineate bike position (space is already available), improving visibility and safety.

If this area is to be redeveloped with Gold Line then bicycle and pedestrian use should be incorporated into all designs. Also, work with Fairplex to incorporate a safe pedestrian / bicycle option to reach Fairplex activities. Currently, there are few if any options to attend events without a car safely.
