I find it odd that we have a school zone to the east of the school around a religious day care but no school zone around the busiest intersection feeding the school - 36th/State/VPW. I drove my son and his friend to a different school each morning so I would see where students were traveling from.

Taking a left off Anderson can be dangerous because there is a sign blocking the view of southbound traffic on 36th/Veterans, and the road is curving too.

I use this cut off a lot when coming from the west on State and wanting to turn north on Veterans/36th. I can avoid the LONG wait for the left turn lane off State.

This intersection was just changed a little while ago at great expense, and here you want to re-do it again. Are you just making work to keep your people busy? In tough times people expect their governments to be frugal, as they are, and stop wasting the taxpayers' money. Leave it alone!

  5. July 10 2012

The intersection will never be safe if nothing is done about all the vehicles that run the red lights at this intersection.

Although I like having Starbucks as a neighbor, the traffic their business generates ends up routing through a portion of Alameda Street (due to limited access points on/off State and Vets). This has made a fairly tranquil street a bit dangerous for local drivers and pedestrians during the morning Starbucks rush. Thankfully, I don't think there have been any serious accidents to date as a result of this increased traffic, but it may just be a matter of time before it happens. It would be good to see more formalized and enforced traffic routing to keep these cars off of Alameda Street.

Given the unique nature of this intersection in Boise (a park/natural area, retail, and residential), this may be a great location to attempt a "nodal" multi-use development that incorporates all of these in a way that promotes pedestrian/bicycle travel and public transit. We have talked about it for years, but this could be a location where it might actually work if we PLAN for it!

I live in this neighborhood south of State Street, and it is VERY DIFFICULT to make a left turn from northbound Mercer onto westbound State Street during the morning and afternoon/evening rush times (given the close proximity of the State/Vets intersection).

No bike lane exists, no sidewalk, though clearly people walk here (dirt path is visible)

The people crossing illegally: state between VMP and 36th - clithero-vine is a huge problem. A skywalk would be an excellent idea! The bus stop in front of the Good Samaritan home is very badly placed and needs to be moved or just done away with since there is the nicely dedicated bus lane just down the road. Maybe changing the middle turning lane of state in this area and making it right and left turn only going the respective ways would be a good idea harder maybe for motorists but much safer for all the peds. and cyclists. I live on clithero and live in fear every day of seeing someone who is crossing state or a cyclist crossing clover or clithero, get hit by a car.
Also, be mindful of the landscaping chosen along state -big bushes obscure cyclists who do not look to see if you see them when you are in a car before going across the side streets. An education program for those who choose to cross state at the Good Samaritan home over to the gas station would be good or simply post a bicycle cop there to ticket them. It is very dangerous thtat they do this .

Crossing the intersection at Veterans and State is frightening! Cars turning east onto State from Veterans don't seem to see pedestrians trying to cross State. I've tried crossing with my dog and my granddaughter in a stroller (you'd think that would be hard to miss) and nearly been hit numerous times. They don't seem to want to wait the few seconds to let us cross.

My experience is that cars coming out of albertsons (heading east on state) are the main danger to bike riders and pedestrians in the area...whether they are crossing or riding with traffic

  13. July 09 2012

It would be great to provide easier access to Jordan Street from the Veterans Park Neighborhood, but at the moment there is a large fence around the backside of the Idaho Transportation Dept. with only one access points on Moore St. Is there a way to provide another access point?

I ride to State from north on bike land then must maneuver over to east side of Vets and ride contra=sidewalk. Dangerous.
Consider design elements like trees, bulb outs, bike lanes as traffic calming and aesthetic improvements. Was just thinking about this site and saw your survey. Thanks for taking time.

This intersection is hard to get into while going south.

  16. July 09 2012

I live near here and frequent a number of businesses and recreational areas. It's a rich environment but has always been difficult and dangerous to navigate. There's just too much through traffic, people in a hurry to get somewhere else. It's hard to imagine much improvement for this area without some radical changes or reduction in car counts.

  17. July 09 2012

Bicyclists frequently use the east side of 36th heading southbound (riding on the "left"), trying to access the park. I've seen too many near misses around Anderson, the entrance to Albertsons, and State St because of this. Not sure what design decisions would help--maybe signage in the bike lanes.

It would be great if there was a safe way for pedestrians to cross State St. between the intersections of 33rd and 36th. Maybe a sky bridge over State St. so traffic isn't disturbed?

Dedicated bike lanes and sidewalk on both sides of VMP would help with safety and connectivity. I commute, via bike, on the sidewalk on east side of VMP because I feel it is the safest route, but this creates conflicts with pedestrians.

  22. July 08 2012

In general, pedestrians need better (more/safer) opportunities to cross state street between 36th and 28th street. This includes at the intersection of 36th and Veterans, as noted by others already, but also includes other places on state street.

  23. July 08 2012

I suggest a dedicated right turn lane from southbound 36th onto westbound State Street (and also mark the road into Taft school from 36th as not a through street / currently used as such for southbound 36th traffic heading west on State). I also suggest you evaluate adding a pedestrian bridge over State Street in this area. I drive through this intersection at least seven - ten times weekly and don't have problems with it other than sometimes when pedestrians are crossing (and not obeying signals). Also, I think a dedicated right-turn lane from northbound Veterans Parkway onto State would be well used during high volume traffic times. I do appreciate the extra lane just as you turn from Veterans northbound onto State Street eastbound and I hope that is not lost.

  24. July 08 2012

People living at the Good Samaritan Home (mostly seniors or disabled), located on the south side of the street at 3501 State, cross State Street to the Sinclair station located on the north side of the street. There is no light here. I suggest an educational/safety program with the project to encourage them (and others in this area) to cross at one of the lights.

  25. July 08 2012

If this lane was right turn only, motorists would not need to cut through Anderson to access westbound State Street.
