Comments for “14th St Road Safety Audit”
-
During morning commute saw an eastbound SUV on RI Ave make a fast right turn south onto 14th and run over several feet of the raised bus island. The SUV rolled right onto the island, kept going, and drove across and off it. Luckily no one was crossing or standing there at the time.

The street parking near Swann St is signed for Zipcar or carsharing vehicle parking only. I'm not sure if Zipcar actually keeps cars here anymore. This issue should be checked through the entire corridor.
-
The pavers/concrete in the sidewalk in front of Trader Joe's are in poor condition.
-
When it rains, puddles form in the low points in the sidewalk here along 14th St, at the SW corner of 14th & U.
-
General comment for bus islands: consider adding a second pedestrian crossing between the island and the sidewalk, further away from the main boarding area. A lot of people walking from the north (at this stop for example) cut across the bike lane and vehicle travel lane in order to get to the bus platform and get around the railings.
-
At the NE corner of 14th & Belmont: there is no detectable warning surface at the curb ramp. And this curb ramp looks like it leads toward 14th St, rather than into the crosswalk.
-
At the SE corner of 14th & Belmont, the storm inlets, the small landing area at the top of the curb ramp, and the angled curb line seem like they could be a tripping hazard or difficult to navigate for people with disabilities.
-
If the street is to be repaved, consider changing the existing concrete pavement north of V St to asphalt pavement. The asphalt would provide more visual contrast with pavement markings (since asphalt is darker than concrete), so markings would be more visible.
-
Add additional mid bike lane crossing for bus shelters throughout the corridor
-
Hard to approach the 14th at Belmont SB bus stop coming from the north as a pedestrian
-
place RRFB here
-
two stage left turn box for NBL bicyclists
-
tactile pads for SB peds on the west leg at Clifton
-
Observed bus rider accessing 14th & N St SB platform from the opposite end of the pedestrian ramp, crossing in front of the railing and bike lane. Note all bus islands only have one access point.
-
Evidence of crashes at 14th St SB island at Rhode Island Ave.
Concrete island curb was broken and island metal railing barrier was been bent, suggesting multiple crashes.
-
Double parking observed near Church Street 'streetery.'
-
Multiple illegal U-turns observed at ‘Wallach’ Place and in other areas of the corridor.
-
SB 14th St at U Street bus island - possible ADA issues.
Please double check the trash can and drainage at this stop as it appears there may not be clear space for a wheel chair to pass.
-
EB U Street bus stop (90, 92, 96) sign is slightly misaligned with the shelter, which is about 40-50 feet to the west.
-
U St EB bus stop shelter cleaning - urination issue.
ANC participant complained about public urination at this bus shelter. Perhaps this comment can be directed to the appropriate team at DDOT to address.
-
Several pedestrians and some bus riders observed crossing at Belmont, where there is no crosswalk or signal. The NB bus stop here only adds to the safety issue.
-
Chapin SB bus stop - poor visibility. The tree box is directly adjacent to the shelter so the tree branches are extending into the street, which reduces sight lines from the bus to the stop.
-
Chaplin Street un-signalized crosswalk: cars slow to yield here, especially cars traveling southbound down the steep hill.
-
Lots of mid-block crossing here as people follow Belmont Street and walk directly across 14th with no lights, signs, or crosswalks.
-
some uneven surfaces at this intersection
