The Gregson "super highway" corridor needs to be addressed ASAP. It's only a matter of time until deaths start to pile up. The speed limit is far too high. But the slight decline in this passage leads to massive speeding. A lower speed limit is great, but I think there also needs to be bigger changes such as turning them into two-way streets. We need change now.
Too many approach lanes on Trinity - seems very oversized for this neighborhood. Also needs a crosswalk on the east leg of the intersection.
When exiting this alley, it's very hard to see cars from Trinity coming up the hill, especially with parked vehicles on the west side of the street. It would feel a lot safer to exit if there were two-way traffic here.
There are near accidents at the DSA crosswalks on a regular basis. People speed through this area as the road flattens out and they get closer to downtown.
This is a BLIND hill. We live in the 3rd house on the left over this hill. Cars travel unimpeded from the light at Club to the light at Markham, apporximately 1/2 mile. They are going so fast over this hill - including large trucks (another issue) and buses - and we cannot see them coming and they cannot see us. They cannot see us trying to pull into or out of our driveways. They are often going 50 - 60 mph.
I have seen multiple serious accidents here in the last several years! Visibility needs to be improved by racing the canopy of the trees. I have to pull too far out into the road to see the traffic coming down the hill from club Boulevard as I am trying to turn left onto Gregson. If the visibility can’t be improved, then a stoplight needs to be placed at this intersection. There should also be a marked pedestrian crosswalk here.
Traffic coming out of the Vickers/Lakewood intersection going west down Lakewood is consistently 10+ MPH over the posted speed limit and runs right through a school zone. Kids, parents, and pets cross this poorly marked intersection frequently and measures should be taken to slow this traffic down through the school zone at minimum.
If converted to two-way operation, a roundabout is a natural here in some configuration, either at University/Duke, or even Duke/Lakewood (with some redirecting of traffic. The grade at Duke/Lakewood would seem to make University/Duke the better option.) Even with keeping Duke/Gregson/Vickers one-way, a roundabout here could clean up operations and make pedestrian crossings safer.
A roundabout here (bringing both ramps into the roundabout) would help with speed and pedestrian crossings (especially the non-stop off-ramp.) This would especially be valuable if Duke/Gregson are converted to two-way operation. (The grade may be tricky to bring the off-ramp up to the intersection. I'd look at moving the roundabout north a bit to try and handle the grades.)
Eliminate the Parker St. connection to NC 147 and re-direct to the Chapel Hill ramp (plenty of capacity there.) This eliminates a somewhat blind turn onto Parker, changes the environment here, and also helps operation and safety on NC 147 (the Chapel Hill on-ramp can be lengthened to allow better merging.)
The limited AADT volume data available tends to indicate that volume has decreased since the completion of the East End Connector, redirecting volume to 85/885 that is heading to RTP. That likely allows conversion of Duke and Gregson to two-way streets, IF appropriate intersection measures, such as roundabouts (mini roundabouts?), are installed to control speeds and provide safe intersection operations. Just converting to two-way operation with signals will increase the speeding, since signal coordination is tougher (one-way operation allows the signals to somewhat control speeds if timed appropriately.)
Given multiple roads intersecting, and problems with pedestrians, looks like a good place for a roundabout. Simplify the intersection by eliminating the west leg of Forest Hills Plaza, realign the east leg, and you have a four-leg intersection. I trust Kittleson has the expertise to design one to fit!
I am very much OPPOSED to making Duke Street two-way south of, say, Morehead Ave. because Duke Street is much too narrow for that here. Yes, some cars go too fast but there are other ways to slow them. Making the 1000 block of Duke St 2-way will cause other problems - namely ingress and egress for those of us who live here and parking issues. Don't do that to us! Making it 2-way north of Morehead or 147.is fine, but not in my front yard.
Cars consistently speed down this intersection of Lakewood avenue as they approach the school zone, endangering all school pedestrian and vehicular traffic. It is primarily cars coming through the intersection of Vickers and Lakewood. Many of these cars are going 10 mph over the designated speedlimit.
Speed control on Vickers! We need speed bumps and more crosswalks.
Need signs to limit/reduce parking at the bottom of Proctor St. Cars are often left there for days/weeks. Especially when they are parked near the bottom of the hill this reduces visibility when turning left from Proctor onto Duke ST (the bushes/hedges in front of the Hill House also reduce visibility here)
Improved speed control at this intersection - agree with other comments re hill reducing visibility and accidents occurring as a result.
The entire intersection is not pedestrian friendly in any way. Cars speeding, no dedicated cross walks time or call buttons, cars not paying attention.
Agree with other comments: there needs to be more crosswalks here. And sidewalks--they vanish! Like, the crosswalk takes you across the street and then the side walk ends 10 feet later.
I've lived near thus intersection for 20 years and witnessed/heard numerous accidents. One person, at least, died here. People speed down both roads; limited visibility, especially for those zooming into the intersection on Lakewood coming from the west. I know Vickers is a "bus route" or whatever, but we need speed bumps, or a roundabout or more stop lights...anything to slow people down. Or else, someone else will be dead. Guaranteed.
This intersection is terrible - visibility is almost non-existent due to the many cars from the car lot being parked along Lakewood and Duke st. Add to that the fast speeds of cars turning onto Duke from University, and general confusion of the many roads crossing here. This intersection needs to be radically overhauled.
Major traffic calming needs to be implemented on Vickers. There are multiple schools and parks, with many kids and adults walking along and crossing the street.
This intersection needs to be completely reconfigured. Cars go too fast down Vickers and visibility is very poor on all sides. Perhaps a small roundabout?
The Parker / Shepherd intersection desparately needs to be a 4-way stop. Parked cars along Shepherd make it nearly impossible to see oncoming traffic as you're crossing the intersection from Parker
Duke should be converted to two-way traffic and this intersection recreated to eliminate the confusion of this area by creating ONE intersection where Duke, Lakewood, and University come together at a stop light with appropriate pedestrian crossing since many folks use this area to get to the grocery and other businesses along this cooridor. Get rid of that silly triangle and create a proper intersection.
