As a 28-yr residents at Gregson & Dacian, We’ve seen nonstop speeding and crashes at this intersection. Dropping the limit to 20 and adding speed bumps on every block would finally force cars to slow down and make the streets safer for our community. Please do something.

This spot is a tragedy waiting to happen (this intersection has already experienced numerous crashes).

Kids have to navigate this hazard both solo and with their families as they walk to/from Watts Elementary daily across the speedway of Gregson, where there is zero line of sight with the parked cars blocking your view of oncoming danger.

Dacian also has no speed bump to slow cars down, so many drivers race down Dacian as the fastest route between the superhighways of Duke & Gregson.

    It's a nightmare.

Visibility is poor pulling into Duke St from W Corporation. Traffic also approaches so quickly - so as much as you want to take a final look at the crosswalk (to the right of the intersection) before pulling your car out onto Duke St, if you hesitate, a quickly approaching car in the right lane of Duke St could run right into you as you make the turn.

There's an entrance to the popular Ellerbe Creek Trail at the bottom of Dacian, which encourages pedestrian traffic here, but crossing the road is extremely risky. The visibility here is terrible.

The sidewalk alongside Duke St in front of DSA is in terrible shape. It's virtually impassible for people with wheelchairs or strollers and unsafe for runners. The opposite side of the street has no sidewalks, so there is no good alternative route.

Way too many cars speed 50MPH+ down the stretch from Trinity to Main, and they are often in the midst of first a school zone and then a pedestrian-heavy area around Main Street.

I live on this block and cross Gregson at least once a day. Visibility to cross Gregson and/or to turn left on Gregson from Dacian is very dangerous. Often parked cars are almost entirely blocking visibility of oncoming traffic. Combined with speeding, it's treachous most times I cross.

I live on this block and visibility is horrific, especially if anyone is speeding north on Duke (which, in my experience, is roughly one out of every five cars). I usually have to look through a gap between cars and hope I'm not missing anything and that no one is truly speeding 50MPH+. There is both a speed issue as well as a parking/obstruction of visibility issue at play.

Today I saw a car left turn in the wrong direction at this intersection. They turned slowly on to the faster lane on Greson and narrowly missed a head on collision. If the state insists on having 2-lane one-ways, they should have appropriate signage everywhere on Duke and Gregson. I'm guessing this person was from out of town and didn't know any better without any sign indicating otherwise.

    Ped signals needed

A pedestrian crash occurred at this intersection where a car turning left from Morehead onto Duke hit a child in the crosswalk. An LPI has since been added to the signal, but additional safety improvements are needed, such as high visibility crosswalks, bi-directional curb ramps, curb bulb-outs. Additional traffic calming and/or two-waying Duke would also help slow traffic and keep people from being in a "freeway mindset" when they are not yet on the freeway but approaching the ramp.

There have been numerous accidents at this intersection, multiple of which have resulted with vehicles in yards and in some cases hitting actual residences. This is a school crossing, there's are several apartment complexes right here, this needs to be addressed.

I am asking the town to convert Duke Street into a two-way street with protected bike lanes. At the Duke and W Markham intersection, cars regularly speed and run the red light. There's been a major accident every few months and someone died a few years ago.

This is a neighborhood street, yet it feels unsafe for families. I have two small children, and every day we fear for their safety. A two-way conversion with protected bike lanes would calm traffic, slow drivers, and reduce the frequency of dangerous crashes.

I bike 2X+ a week down W trinity ave and would like to see more done to catch people who run red lights. As a cyclist I would like a dedicated bike lane that connects to the ellerby trail and goes up to duke east campus. Safety measures that slow speeds along these routes will reduce ped and cyclist injury.

We used to live near this intersection, and I attribute the traffic speed, noise, and frequency of accidents to our decision to leave the neighborhood. Post-Covid, speeding was noticeably up. Working from home allowed me to witness an accident every 4-6 weeks, including one that landed on the front porch of a neighbor and another that almost hit the house between us and Gregson. More than once, those parked along Gregson awoke to wrecked cars (and us to the car alarms that went off when speeding cars side-swiped them). It was miserable, and we stopped walking along Gregson, even with sidewalks, since it felt unsafe. I miss our neighbors and the convenience of being downtown, but would not move back unless the one way traffic pattern were to change. It’s a real problem.

Crossing at these crosswalks can only be done safely if you look both ways several times. Somehow it's just a mess. I've worked nearby for 25 years. Much of the running of the red lights seems to have developed post-Covid. Scooters, bikes, cars, buses, trucks unloading ... it's very busy and somehow people are simply not paying attention or willing to obey the traffic lights. They are even often going the wrong way on Gregson having turned onto it beyond the bridge or at the Brightleaf lot on Gregson just south of Main.

Many cars are traveling 10-15 miles over the speed limit by the time they get to this intersection. It's a hectic intersection due to several apartment buildings, school bus route, city bus stop. Feels very dangerous!

The intersection of Gregson + Main Streets is frightening much of the day and night. My associates and I who work at Brightleaf have seen it all including several vehicles driving the wrong way (south) on Gregson. People traveling north on Gregson run yellow and red lights and fly through that intersection.

Poor condition of sidewalk, overgrown vegetation, speed of traffic and narrow verge make walking along these blocks of Gregson feel very unsafe.

Cars park too close to intersection on east side of Gregson making it difficult and dangerous for cars on Monmouth to cross through intersection. Also need E-W crosswalks on Gregson.

Very difficult to turn left (north) from Dacian onto Duke. Cars coming up Duke are very fast. Hill blocks visibility. To see clearly, I have to pull my car up practically into the first (left) lane of traffic. And if a car happens to be coming up Duke wanting to turn left onto Dacian, I am in their way. This 900 block of Dacian is full of parked cars on both sides of the street, leaving not enough room for me turning from Dacian onto Duke and another turning from Duke onto Dacian - and it’s even worse when the car coming from Duke is speeding. Or even worse still, when the cars behind the turning one are speeding - which is almost always the case. Solution: SLOW DOWN the traffic on Duke.

School crossing, school bus stop, city bus stop, yet a very scary intersection. Neckdowns help with pedestrian crossing but do not solve the problem. Crossing in a car is very difficult. Cars parked on Gregson make visibility poor. Speeds on Gregson make it scary and dangerous. Many crashes at this intersection. Stop sign or stop light or speed bump is needed.

As a resident of N. Gregson St who crosses the street daily to walk my daughter to Watts Elementary, I would urge the city and NCDOT to come up with a cost conscious, attainable, and effective solution to the high speeds and reckless driving that occur daily on Gregson and Duke Sts. In the seven years I’ve lived here I’ve seen traffic decrease but speeds and accidents increase. It is time for a change. Bus riders, pedestrians, motorists and neighbors deserve it!
