This is the worst intersection in the city. Both as a pedestrian and a motorist, it takes forever to cross, and is very dangerous. Eastbound cars on Florida Ave. have to get through several congested lights, which leads them to run the red arrow at 1st St. NE, making it very dangerous for pedestrians. I think an overpass or underpass, with a pedestrian walkway, is necessary.

  2. March 20 2014

Biking along the entire length of Florida Ave is inhospitable due to the number of speeding drivers. Striping bike lanes wouldn't improve the situation much, but a separated cycle track would significantly improve safety by creating a barrier between bikes and car traffic and reducing the ability of cars to speed.

  3. March 20 2014

Both bicycling and walking, this quasi-traffic circle may be the most inhospitable intersections in the area. The whole thing should be bulldozed and re-designed so that pedestrians can cross easily without waiting forever and without being at risk from right-turning traffic, and so that bikes have a clear, separated right of way along Florida Ave.

I've ridden a lot on this section in particular and agree with the other comments, cars use Florida as a connection to other major roads, and drive too fast. There are also a lot of drunk drivers from U Street area on weekends. I used to work retail at 14th and U and work until the evening. I would have felt much safer if there had been a cycletrack when I was commuting home by bike from work. I actually stopped biking and starting walking because I felt safer on the sidewalk many times over.

  5. March 20 2014

A a cyclist it is challenging to ride on the street when you're coming back from the Harris Teeter (in particular to Bloomingdale or shaw. I often use the sidewalk instead at this juncture.

  6. March 19 2014

Very dangerous. Significant changes - changing to a roundabout, moving NY Ave traffic underground, a dedicated bike lane etc - need to be made to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

  8. March 19 2014

Agree that intersection is dangerous. Please improve signage and make other improvements to increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

  9. March 19 2014

This intersection is dangerous. Agree with previous posters about closing WV from 8th to K and prohibiting trucks. Also, perhaps move parking back from corners to increase visibility of pedestrians and bicyclists to cars.

  10. March 19 2014

I have biked this way to get to Union Market (with my 2-year daughter on my bicycle) and cars come down this street at 40mph-60mph during the day not looking out for bicyclists at all. A bike line, lights, stop signs, cross walks, markings - anything to make this area and 5th street safer - especially as Union Market & NOMA continue to develop.

  11. March 19 2014

I totally agree with the previous comments recommending a bike lane like 15th street (2 way and protected). This is one of the best routes to get from NE to NW and it's frightening to bicycle on at the moment.

  12. March 19 2014

This stretch needs a place for bikers - it is the best way to get across town and is unsafe/pothole hell.

  13. March 19 2014

Evening traffic backs up on M Street due to poor timing for the signal at 4th and M Streets NE. Southbound traffic is extremely light in the evening, but is allowed significantly more time than the M Street traffic. Variable timing for the signal would help drivers, bikers and pedestrians. Right turn prohibition on eastbound M should be reassessed as well.

  14. March 19 2014

    Better lane markings are needed.

  15. March 19 2014

Get rid of the Wendy's and put in a large traffic circle or other intersection that is more efficient.

  16. March 19 2014

Sidewalk does not allow wheelchairs. Signs and light poles are in the way.

  17. March 19 2014

It would be great to get brick sidewalks that matched the rest of M St. NE. Additionally, new globe style streetlights would be nice.

  18. March 19 2014

East-west connections in NE are very limited and the combination of K St and FL Ave to the Starburst are a great bicycle/pedestrian route. Right now the FL Ave part is bad to walk and the full route can be very intimidating to bicycle. Drivers go very fast and can be very unpredictable, especially during rush hour. Traffic calming would be key along the entire route. As one other commenter stated, removing rush hour restrictions would make a big difference by removing the ability for drivers to careen around other cars in an attempt to get ahead.

  19. March 19 2014

K Street needs traffic calming. It is just a race way for Maryland commuters. Consider removing parking restrictions that prevent cars from parking during rush hour. Also, please consider adding speed humps and/or speed cameras. A dedicated bike lane would be great and get a lot of use.

  20. March 19 2014

The sidewalks are too narrow along Florida Avenue and the traffic moves way to fast. Please take action to calm traffic. Also, this road desperately needs a bike lane. It is flat out frightening to bike. Please consider removing a traffic lane or two and adding street parking.

Please add a two-way bike-lane on the Capital Hill side of Florida Ave. (like the one on 15th St. NW) ASAP - It is so dangerous to bike on Florida Ave. today.

  23. November 11 2013

Give the south side street parking on K Street NE back to the residents all day (including between 4 pm and 6:30 pm). There is no need for the extra lane. Cars are speeding in a residental area and past an elementary school. Reserve this parking to zone 6 residents to help with parking congestion. We need to keep only local traffic in the neigbhorhood. K Street and Florida should not be used for Maryland commuters. Speed bumps would also help

The two main destinations are Downtown (via H ST, Union Station), and U St (via NOMA). Neither destination has infrastructure to support biking and both are fairly dangerous. A cycletrack should be added and on street parking removed. Main arteries should solely be used for multimodal transportation, not parking (which should be on smaller side streets).

  25. October 15 2013

24 street parking is necessary for residents and to slow down traffic...there is nowhere to leave your vehicle if you do not have dedicated parking behind your house. It's not zoned, so you cant even park 2 blocks away in a zone 5 or 6 spot. Traffic flow will still move during the rush hour with one lane dedicated to a parking/bike lane. "No rush hour parking" is not necessary.
