Take multiple measure to calm traffic here. I believe this is the spot where an 80 yo woman was killed by a speeding commuter several months ago

  2. June 18 2013

A bike lane on each side of Florida Ave would be a needed and welcome addition to the street and help better connect the area to other parts of the city in the most affordable way possible.

  3. June 18 2013

Better bike access/safety here, especially from M st north to P st. Going around the traffic circle is intimidating, at best, on a bike, so I often have to ride on the sidewalk. There are few other options around this tough intersection when going between Bloomingdale/U St and the Hill, so safety improvements here are really important to the overall bike network.

  4. June 18 2013

Study needs to get cyclists across North Cap so it can link with the E-W bike route/lanes on R. Make the connection and you have bike infrastructure from Dupont to the Starburst

  5. June 18 2013

Intersection of K, WV and 8th is vital for connection with Florida Ave corridor. 8th Street is already an excellent N-S bike route from Pennsylvania to WV

  6. June 18 2013

Intersection of K, WV and 8th is vital for connection with Florida Ave corridor. K Street is already an excellent E-W bike route from 8th NW to 8th NE.

This Florida Avenue crossing (M Street NE + Florida Ave NE) is the most difficult part of the most direct pedestrian route from the NoMa-Gallaudet Metro onto the campus, and is currently an extremely intimidating and dangerous intersection to cross. Highly visible improvements here for safe pedestrian crossing would vastly improve transit/walking commutes for faculty/staff/students/visitors, and also convince more people to use transit/walking to get the school.

  8. June 18 2013

A Northbound bike route on 6th should extend north of Florida Ave and continue up Brentwood parkway to the 9th street bridge

  9. June 18 2013

A South-bound bike route from Brentwood Parkway should use Penn Street and then link up to 4th Street to go south and connect onto the 4th Street bike lanes that exist south of Florida Ave.

  10. June 18 2013

Crossing under the railroad tracks is a nightmare for cyclists and pedestrians. I use the road most the time, sometimes the sidewalk, but it is dreadfully unsafe, and most of the delay for cars is from NY Ave, so people are simply queued here, not really needing the road space for travel. The roadspace should be reallocated to give drivers no more than four lanes here, and the remaining two lanes should be divided into bicycle and walking routes, preferably the bike route should be a two way cycletrack on the North side of the road.

  11. June 18 2013

The 6th Street bike lanes should be extended up 6th, and ultimately up Brentwood Pkwy and across the 9th street bridge (could be on the sidewalks of the bridge). East if the MBT, this is the only way to cross to upper NE without having to cross New York Avenue at grade. 6th street is extremely wide, and the lanes could be done as a separated cycletrack on the East side of the road. This will help with bicycle transportation as the Union Market area changes to a more neighborhood oriented destination.

The crosstown bike route here is very important. There really is no better way to make this connection on the horizon.

  12. June 18 2013

A two way cycletrack on the West side of West Virginia Ave is an important safety feature that the rode needs. Especially when the WalMart opens at NY Ave and Bladensburg, this will be a main route to get there, and many people, myself included, will want a safe way to bike to this new retail hub. Bike lanes are OK, but since the entire Gallaudet side has almost no driveways, it seems like the opportunity is very conducive to a two way separated cycletrack that will be safe for neighborhood kids, seniors, and everyone in between.

  13. June 18 2013

This stretch of Florida Ave NE should have a separated cycle track. I ride the entire route on my daily commute between Capitol Hill NE and U Street NW. The extra capacity currently on the road leads large echelons of cars to race each other after the signals change, and then once they pass, cyclists have a totally open road with no cars present until 30 seconds later when another echelon of speeding cars races by. This suggests to me that there is significant extra capacity that is leading to weaving and racing at intersections, and that extra capacity should be limited by a road diet traffic configuration. The extra space should be used to widen sidewalks and create divided cycletracks for both NW and SE directions.

The only times I see large traffic jams are at the signals for New York Ave (traffic can back up as far as 6th NE), and at 14th St / H St. NE. Both traffic jams only exist at rush hour, and the vehicles aren't moving, they are just queued waiting to proceed through a downstream signal.

A center turn lane that is sometimes a solid median would help to control vehicular weaving, and to allow safer pedestrian crossing for the whole stretch.

  14. June 18 2013

Sidewalks are too narrow for pedestrian traffic. Cars driven over the speed limit create an unsafe environment for cyclists.

This is an important east-west bicycle route and a major pedestrian path to Florida Ave. Market, Gallaudet, and H St./Capitol Hill. Narrow the travel lanes, widen the sidewalks, and provide a protected cycletrack.

  15. June 18 2013

West Virginia is not a healthy road. It should be a safe residential street on its east side, and a pleasant stroll or bike ride along the edge of the Gallaudet campus along its other side.

Maybe the University could grant an easement, to create enough room for a pedestrian pathway, and then a two-way cycletrack between the curb and parked cars on the west side. If the vehicle lanes don't need to leave room for bikes, then there'd be more space for a really nice and wide sidewalk and additional tree boxes on the east side.

The bike facility needs to continue up the rest of West Virginia to NY Ave / Montana circle, if it's really going to be used. Some areas are narrower, but further up there's enough space for continuing a separated facility, especially in non-residential areas that don't need street parking on both sides.

  16. June 18 2013

I ride a bicycle to Gallaudet pretty often. Florida is the *worst* place to ride. And there's just not enough room to put in a decent bike facility on that street -- especially because the sidewalks need to be wide enough for pedestrians who are signing to see each while walking (2-3 abreast).

But L St is a great location for all the bikes coming from Noma/MBT, that's where I usually ride now. Plenty of width, little traffic. Put separated bike lanes on each side, between the curb and parking, and put signage on Florida to get the bikes over to L St. Even if the vehicle lanes get a little narrower than the standards suggest, no one will care, it's a slow street (with tons of speed bumps!).

Everyone will be much safer with fewer conflicts.

At the east end of L St., connect to a decent bike facility on West Virginia going north, and another street off West Virginia to continue east (e.g., Morse to the Starburst intersection).

  17. June 17 2013

Traffic frequently fails to yeild to pedistrian or observe the bike lanes. In-Roadway Warning Light (IRWL) enhanced crosswalk system or a Smart Crosswalk Traffic Calming System is needed given traffic between the Market, Gaulledet University, and the residential community.

  18. June 17 2013

Maximizing exit and entry points along the metropolitan branch trail will be vital to increased capacity as the density of NoMA increases. Whenever possible separating pedestrian and bike traffic will become increasingly important and this area already has heavy use at times.

  19. June 17 2013

Given planned mixed use development on the North side of this street, a In-Roadway Warning Light (IRWL) enhanced crosswalk system or a Smart Crosswalk Traffic Calming System is needed given bus, metro, and residential traffic in this area.

  20. June 17 2013

Bike lines are missing or insufficient to support Capital Bikeshare traffic and other bike traffic to Union Market, Gallaudet University, and the Florida Market. Linking M ST NE to 5th ST NE lanes seems the most viable given MBT restrictions however something needs to be done to accommodate increasing bicycle traffic across several dangerous intersections.

  21. June 17 2013

Common crossing point for pedestrians departing buses and the northern exit of the Metro station. Given the proximity to future planned greenspace this crossing and supporting sidewalks are undersized and poorly connected given anticipated increases in volume with planned construction.

Cars frequently disregard pedestrians and dusk and night time is particularly hazardous. An In-Roadway Warning Light (IRWL) enhanced crosswalk system or a Smart Crosswalk Traffic Calming System is needed.

  22. June 17 2013

The crosswalk is poorly observed and the sidewalk is undersized to accommodate pedestrian traffic resulting from bus routes, the Two Rivers charter school, the Florida Market, and surrounding residential area. Given the proximity of the school, this should have substantially slowed traffic and perhaps a school zone.

Cars frequently disregard pedestrians and dusk and night time is particularly hazardous. An In-Roadway Warning Light (IRWL) enhanced crosswalk system or a Smart Crosswalk Traffic Calming System is needed.

  23. June 17 2013

The crosswalk is poorly observed and the sidewalk is undersized to accommodate pedestrian traffic resulting from bus routes, Union Market, Gallaudet University, and surrounding residential area. Along the SW side of 5th street numerous sidewalk obstructions complicate accessible use and result in congestion during events.

Cars frequently disregard pedestrians and dusk and night time is particularly hazardous. An In-Roadway Warning Light (IRWL) enhanced crosswalk system or a Smart Crosswalk Traffic Calming System is needed.

  24. June 17 2013

The sidewalk on the south side is vastly undersized to accommodate pedestrian traffic from Union Market, Gallaudet University, and surrounding residential area. Along 6th street numerous sidewalk obstructions complicate accessible use and result in congestion during events.

Cars frequently disregard pedestrians and dusk and night time is particularly hazardous. An In-Roadway Warning Light (IRWL) enhanced crosswalk system is desperately needed.

Bicycle lanes require some kind of Traffic Calming System as they are frequently disregarded.

I live on the 1200 block of Florida Ave and I have to agree with others who've posted that we need 24 hour residential street parking. I have to park my car several blocks from my house not only because of the no parking during rush hour but also because my block isn't zoned for anything. No one is going to pay any attention to a 25 mph speed limit on a four lane road. Let us residents park on the street and solve the problem.
