Comments for “Connect Fairbanks: FAST Planning Non-Motorized Plan Update”
-
separated path along the parks highway is starting to have surface deterioration problems. Needs a plan for resurfacing.
-
There need to be sidewalks built along s university ave from davis to airport way so pedestrians coming from apts and the hotel have a safe route to fred meyer and safeway. This is especially dangerous during the winter due to berms.
-
There needs to be a sidewalk or wider shoulder on this crossover roadway from the johansen to merhar. It is not a safe place to walk during the winter due to snow berms.
-
winter snow removal at the illinois/college intersection often leaves pedestrian access to the crossing controls blocked.
-
Sidewalks on 3rd St from steese highway to old steese highway are in poor shape and need to be rebuilt.
-
Replacing the aurora slough bridge is supposed to provide wider sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists. Badly needed.
-
Hopefully when the steese/johansen intersection project is finalized the new road and separated path will be built from the old steese johansen intersection to farmers loop rd via farmers loop extension rd. This will provide a replacement for the existing farmers loop extension path that connects to the johansen path and is in horrible condition.

Chena Landings Loop Path Reconstruction
The path surface is broken up by roots. Needs to be rebuilt and maintenance responsibility needs to be clarified
-
8th Avenue Resurfacing
path surface is in rough shape needs to be repaved to provide safe access to the middle school.
-
Dawson Shoulders
Short section of Dawson rd from Lineman's Dr needs to have widened shoulders to complete the connection to the Hurst path.
-
widening the shoulders of roland rd would make it much safer for cyclists and pedestrians.
-
portions of this path are badly cracked along the edges due to the failure of the path bed.
-
The bike path from the chena river south to airport way is a mess on the west side of the steese highway. It needs to be rebuilt. The surface is bad, the path is discontiguous and narrow
-
Steese highway path needs to be resurfaced from jjohansen intersection to 3rd st. Current surface is breaking up in some areas.
-
When the johansen/steese interchange is built, there will be a need to have sidewalks or path access from Lazelle/Hamilton Acres. Pedestrain facilities for lazelle rd and D st pedestrians should be built.
-
Mitchell Expressway Parallel Bicycle and Pedestrian Facilities
Using the mitchell expressway as a route for a south fairbanks path is a good idea. It doesn't have ROW issues like van horn rd. It doesn't have the problem of numerous iintersecting driveways and cross streets that the van horn route would have.
It has signalized intersections at s univ ave, peger, lathrop and s cushman for safe crossings.
It provides connections to paths like old airport way (boat st to mitchell)(connection from ester path), s univ ave sidewalks(connections from farmers loop path), peger sidewalk (connection johansen path/pioneer park), lathrop sidewalk( connection for rebuilt cowles st and downtown area) route to tanana lakes recreation area, south cushman and to the separated path to be built from s cushman to badger rd and eventually north pole.
-
Rerouting the bike path (or adding a section) behind the business in this area would allow for a much smoother, nicer ride without having to fight traffic at crossings by McDonald's and gas station intersections.
-
Woodriver Elementary is located in this area. Currently there isn't a safe way to access trails and land across Chena Pump. An underpass would be perfect to expand educational and recreational opportunities for students and families on both the river and ridge sides.
-
Van Horn Road – University Avenue – Peger Road
This route is a poor choice for a separated path. Too many drive ways and side streets make it unsafe and the cost of Right of Way will be high. Better to look at paralleling the mitchell expressway.
-
We need a safe crossing from WoodRiver School and the Chena Small Tracts neighborhood across Chena Pump Road to the Chinook Conservation Park, owned by the Interior Alaska Land Trust
-
Continue Chena Riverwalk
-
Connect Birchwood path to Nussbaumer park and west along Iditarod to connect with Hamilton Acres Park and Slaterville for improved access to downtown and riverside parks.
-
College Road Pedestrian Crossings
Yes!
-
More options for crossing peger in these locations. A path on the east side of the bridge would help. People will continue to cross PEger unsafely, whether you build crossings at the intersections. So lets have a good crossing mid block

Chena River Walk Stage III—Segment 1
I love this route along the river along Phillips field. Investigate continuing east to front street, through Doyon and across the Slough. Minimal private property in this location.
