I appreciate having some open lawn space for games, picnics, dog walking, etc.

I strongly oppose the proposal for this extension of the library. While I like the current library well enough, I do not think it is such a prominent feature of the neighborhood to merit this kind of expansion, given the way it will dominate this very high traffic portion of the plaza, and considering the massive cost involved. I do not foresee that a sizable number of people will go through the trouble of using this entrance requiring going down and back up again, rather than crossing the street to use the normal entrance. To the extent it is partly a design element, I think there are other more cost- and space-efficient ways to add design to the plaza.

I strongly oppose the proposal for this water installation, or any other similar water feature on this section. First, there is no way I would take my son in a bathing suit to play in this fountain given the high traffic in this area (especially with the designated busking area right next to it). In addition to the privacy issues, I would definitely not feel comfortable "setting up shop" in this area, ie. leaving a bag and towel with all our stuff. Another major concern is just having a water fountain in such a high traffic area - I really dont like the idea of walking by in the mornings in my suit on the way to work and risk getting sprayed with water, esp on a windy day. Any such water feature belongs on one of the other segments of the plaza with less foot traffic.

Love the idea of a library extension as a place to go when it is cold. Splash parks have little appeal in the winter. Also, wish this concept could bring back the bosque. Having a shaded area for parents near the splash park would be ideal. Need a place to dry out, take a break, re-apply sunscreen.

Don't over design the kids park. The kids need a place to run around and develop creative play. Swales are great.

If you want to increase use of his lawn as a gathering place, install strong WiFi and on the lawn across PA Ave SE

I hate the proposed building - it's huge, blocky, ugly and totally destroys sightlines and pedestrian pathways. Why can't access to an expanded underground library area be coordinated with the already existing accessways (escalators/elevator) to the underground Metro system?

Please consider an enclosed fence for a small dog park. That is a much better use of the space.

you can't just put up a fence in the way of a currently used path. Need a straight route through from D st here

End the jaywalking. I love either design that forces pedestrians to obey the law and cross at the lights.

New idea: I think that at the top of every Metro station, embedded in the paving, should be a compass rose (or simple north arrow) telling visitors where they are. The trouble with Metro maps is that they don't tell you where you are when you reach the street. What people really need to know when they reach street level is: which way is north?

Did you consider the impact of closing this street? Do you really want drivers going north on 8th to turn 120 degrees to go southeast on Pennsylvania? Is that good transportation planning?

Did you consider the impact of removing the taxi stand? Where will people go to get taxis? Where will taxis loiter?

Before you reverse streets, shouldn't you consider the impact on an area greater than this four-block area? How are drivers supposed to get from the southwest to the northeast, or the reverse, across this intersection? how many blocks out of their way will they have to go?

I like the idea of expanding our branch library underground. But does the entrance have to be so big? Slide 52 shows that the entrance will be almost as big as the existing library!

One of the great vistas on Capitol Hill is along Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol. Please don't destroy this with planting! Particularly when exiting the Metro, people should be able to see where they are. And that view is spectacular.

Although you're concerned about "lines of desired travel" (I think that's the term) in other areas, you seem to abandon that idea when it comes to medians. Why not look at the way people walk to the Metro and try to accommodate those routes, instead of making them impossible?

I like the Capitol Hill Playscape--it's architectural and clever.

I like this plan because it continues South Carolina Avenue as an open space.

The interactive play areas are too much and may be cute for playing one-time but will quickly become outdated and unused. Less is more and a simple play area would be better.

You really need a mid-block crossing. I think bioswales will also breed mosquitos and be dirty.

I don't like this glass pavilion for the library here. The architectural style seems out of place and jarring.

I would love to see more open space for adults and kids alike. A plastic playground cheapens the area and makes it appear artificial. Perhaps just a few pieces that are made out of wood would give a natural look to the area and allow for more open space as well.

Again, enhancing the tree boxes on 8th street is a minor investment that would extend the aesthetic renovation in the area.

Despite other comments, I am actually a fan of juxtaposing traditional and contemporary architectural designs. I'm all for charm, but this library entrance is exciting and adds an additional element of interest to the hill. Perhaps a real concern is that money may be better spent elsewhere, not sure if the ROI is worth it on this element.
