Comments for “Countywide Local Roadway Safety Plan”

The intersections of Marshall/Jefferson and Broadway/Jefferson have high driver traffic volume, particularly during peak commuter hours. Particularly at the Marshall intersection, drivers frequently try to 'cut the line' by driving up into the left turn lane and then continuing to go straight (cutting off those in the right lane), creating chaos at this intersection. There also continues to be confusion at the Jefferson/Broadway intersection that the road is closed in the direction heading towards Main St - if this is a permanent closure it might be a good idea to block the left turn lane to prevent drivers from mistakenly trying to turn left and then cutting drivers off when correcting their mistake and going straight. I am not sure if the timing of these lights has been explored, but it might help with the traffic volume through this stretch of downtown.

Please put a flashing light for this crosswalk - I have never walked across the street here (I would be terrified to) but as a driver there have definitely been times I have been caught off guard by pedestrians because I just did not see them with so many lanes of traffic and cars parked on either side of the street.

Flashing pedestrian lights at more of the entrances to Red Morton Park might be a good idea as lots of families, dog walkers, etc. cross Roosevelt to access or leave the park and drivers aren't always cautious enough when passing by. My suggestion would be around where the parking lots are - here and between Lyons/King.

It would be great to extend the bay trail so that it goes along the bay. There are two gaps that force me to take the interior trail (and go on Beach road). It's not bad, but it's narrow, bumpy, and often there are pedestrians walking dogs off-leash which makes things a bit dangerous. If we could connect this section of the bay trail to the section on the other side of the Anza Lagoon, then that would be awesome and take a lot of bikers off airport blvd, which seems pretty dangerous.

The lanes need to be more clearly labeled that one is turning onto San Bruno Ave and the other is continuing on N McDonnell. There are often people who choose the wrong lane and are trying to go straight from the left turn lane or vice versa, cutting people off in order to fix their mistake.

Southbound on Old Bayshore Hwy is nervewracking through the intersection here, especially since I want to continue straight and turn left at Airport Blvd (to turn into Bay Park and continue on the bike path). I was actually struck by a car, thankfully at low speed, but having a dedicated bike lane would be helpfulf from my point of view. This is one of the two most dangerous intersections on my daily commute.

Completely agree with what is said here, no clear path to go to the turn left lane
Like Liked 1 timeYeah I second this, It's the most dangerous intersection on my commute. In order to get to the bike path over broadway you have to go from the bike lane to the left lane going straight through broadway, crossing 2 lanes in an area where cars are often speeding to make traffic lights.

Since the addition of the median on E Grand that blocks Kimball, cars coming out of Kimball turn right and make a U turn around this median to exit towards 101. I don't know what the intended exit path was for these cars, but the high volume of traffic coming from Genentech via DNA Way suggests that this is not the best route - perhaps a solution is making Kimball to Swift one way towards Haskins?

Lack of road markings cause many drivers to consistently turn left from the right lane in front of other cars. There are near hits every hour particularly during the morning rush hours.

Littlefield desperately needs to be repaved, the potholes are a major hazard for drivers.

Speeding is common in this residential stretch (Adams/Oak/Clinton/Redwood) and with drivers illegally parking on the corner (not just here but all over the neighborhood), poor visibility makes it really difficult to be able to turn out of streets as a driver or pedestrian. There have been a couple accidents on this block of the street alone in the last few years with damage to parked vehicles - likely a result of speed (and intoxication?).

Traffic light for the right turn from Airport onto East Grand, under the 101, is very dim and not visible at all.
Many drivers do not pay attention to the "No Right Turn on Red" signage or notice the light is currently red because the light itself is too dim.

The debris field in this intersection (westbound, left lane) is a regular puncture threat for bike tires, and it's difficult to avoid when on a bike.

Areas of the sidewalk are in poor condition in certain places (or non-existent on some of stretches of East Grand), along with construction blocking off walking paths frequently
Routes are especially not good for electric scooters/skateboards/flywheels, since to use those you have to ride in the bike lane, which is hazardous both due to traffic and the fact debris can cause you to fall off

I have watched a scary accident here where both drivers were in the wrong - a very slow moving construction vehicle was holding up commuter traffic (8 am weekday) and cars were going around the vehicle even though it is one lane in both directions. I watched several cars do this, but then the construction vehicle illegally turned left at this intersection, striking one of the cars that was trying to go around it. Point being, people drive way too fast / in a rush to get to where they need to go and it is pretty reckless on Edgewood where there are so many blind curves and no good way of passing. It's summer now but during the winter when more commuters are on the road when it is dark, it stresses me out seeing bicyclists and walkers on the side of Edgewood because the visibility is really poor. I don't know how feasible a sidewalk / dedicated bike lane would be but it might be worth considering.

The intersection of Edgewood and Alameda de las Pulgas is really scary when there is a power outage in the area because drivers do not understand right of way in a four direction stop light with turn lanes. I have only been a driver here but I cannot imagine trying to walk or bike when the lights are not operating properly.

This intersection should also have a stop sign on Randolph instead of just on Gardiner. This is not a great intersection because people park illegally too close to the corner, making it difficult for you to see if someone is coming on Gardiner before making the turn. Drivers coming up and down Randolph also don't look for pedestrians before turning onto Gardiner.

Pedestrian access to Genentech south campus (buildings 40-48) is pretty poor. There are low hanging trees over the sidewalk at this point that force pedestrians to enter the street without clear view of oncoming traffic. The most convenient way to access building 40/44/45, 46, 47, and 48 would be to turn onto this side street, but there is no good way to do so as a pedestrian (no crosswalk or path up to the existing pathway that wraps around building 40/44/45).

Highway 92 from Highway 280 to the coastal Highway 1 is too narrow for the types of traffic that travel out to the coast. It is a single lane highway most of the way and no barriers to separate the east bound and west bound traffic. Accidents are very bad and close the road for hours. As an evacuation route from the coast, it does not have the capacity to handle large flows of traffic in an emergency.

The fly-over ramp from NB 280 to Westbound Hwy 92 has several street lights burned out and this is very dangerous on a Foggy night with no lights on a curve high above 280!

This is a little scary as a cyclist as cars try to park in the long-term SFO parking and push bikers to the narrow shoulder. There is no bike lane in this section as a few car lanes merge/split coming off of the 380/101 offramp.

Definitely. I commute this way everyday, and having a dedicated space for bikes separated from cars is important. This whole stretch, in both directions, that is between roads leading to freeways can be nerve wracking.
