Many regular deer fatalities on this stretch of highway between Ardath and Cambria Drive
Drivers traveling north on Highway 1, when planning to turn left onto Weymouth Street to access Moonstone Beach Drive and the ocean, have a bizarre habit of overshooting the intersection, turning sharply left around this island, and using the deceleration lane intended for southbound traffic turning right. I've seen lots of near misses, and I had one myself. I was driving south from Big Sur, preparing to turn left onto Weymouth Street. A woman was coming toward me. She had her left turn signal on. I thought we would just turn in front of each other, but she just kept coming. Fortunately, I am a defensive driver, and I know that people do this dozens of times daily. There has to be a way to mark this so people are clear on where to turn.
A light is needed here as well as reduced speed. It is a location of repeated car accidents where drivers turning left onto Weymouth from northbound Hwy1 go past the intersection and turn in the opposite right lane causing accidents and endangering pedestrians who are standing on the median waiting for traffic to pass.
Pedestrians living east of Highway 1 must quickly cross the highway due to lack of visibility of approaching vehicles in both directions due to highway curves. While rushing across this past year, I broke my femur and ended up stranded in the middle of the road with cars driving around me.
Very difficult to turn from Hwy1 to Weymouth in both directions. Cars heading north are always overshooting the turn and cars going south are in danger of being rear ended. I live on Weymouth St and am really glad to hear about this project!

SLOCOG Safety Action Plan Feedback: Hazard. 2:45 last night, street racing happening again on Main Street in Cambria. Super loud cars, woke us up.
SLOCOG Safety Action Plan Feedback: Hazard. Excessively loud cars drive through the downtown area at 2:30 last night. It can't be street legal to have a car make that much noise, there are a few in this area that just drive around and around just to make noise.
Safety Action Plan Feedback: Hazard for riding in a vehicle. Potholes on Preston St (across the street from 1566). They are across from 1566, also a little to the north and to the south (next to the manhole cover). They are getting even bigger. In past years I've filled them myself but I don't have what's necessary. Would public works please take care of this?
SLOCOG Safety Action Plan Feedback: Students of the Cambria Grammar School are typically transported by car and bus because there are no safe areas to walk for that age group along this path with sufficient separation from vehicles. Although few children from grades 1-5 are expected to use this path with upgraded protection, there are adult pedestrians in the Cambria Community who should also have a safe walkway here. Caltrans has installed crosswalk buttons for this intersection, but there is no curb that sufficiently separates pedestrians from traffic for right hand turns going north onto Main Street or south from Ardath Drive. Implement a flat graveled surface about 4 ft. wide above the curb on Ardath Drive and 4 ft. of walkway space on Main Street to the Cambria Grammar School sidewalk.
SLOCOG Safety Action Plan Feedback: The north side of Hwy. 1 is a short section that drains into the existing grooved path during the rainy season which also causes pedestrians to move out into the street with traffic. The curbs are not useful for pedestrians although they provide direct drainage and keep cars off the path. Create a 5-6 ft. walkway along the curb line. A marked crosswalk is needed at the pedestrian crossing on Wilton Drive as well.
SLOCOG Safety Action Plan Feedback: Near-miss while riding in a vehicle. 2 cars driving too fast, appeared to be racing.
SLOCOG Safety Action Plan Feedback: Hazard. We have a few muscle cars that daily create excessive noise and drive at high speeds. We need more police in this area. Red Mustang and Orange Challenger. Nightly at 9:45 to 10:15 they are in the downtown area just going around and around.
SLOCOG Safety Action Plan Feedback: Hazard while walking. There are a few locals in town with fast and very noisy cars. Multiple times a day they drive down main street at unsafe speeds. Orange challenger with black stripes, red mustang with black top, white mustang.
SLOCOG Safety Action Plan Feedback: This section of Burton Drive is located in the vicinity of the Cambria Pines Lodge which has substantial interest in implementing improvements to this walkway. Many students also use this walkway to travel to the local middle school and back home. Construct a paved walkway about 6-7 ft. wide from the white line along the pavement.
SLOCOG Safety Action Plan Feedback: This section of Burton Drive has an established path and is fairly accessible for single pedestrians. However, it is difficult for mothers with children to use this path which cannot support anything with wheels. In addition, parked contractor vehicles are a problem since they force pedestrians out into traffic lanes and cause issues for the path level in rainy weather. The goal for this section of Burton Drive is for 2 people to be able to walk on the walkway together or pass each other safely.
