Yes, it is really hard for drivers pulling out of these parking spaces - even careful ones - to see cyclists due to the parking configuration. This will need to be addressed in some way if this is to become a bike boulevard.

  2. April 23 2015

I agree with previous comment. Between the curb, the curve and the balustrade, this is a jarring transition, especially when coming down the hill.

  3. April 23 2015

This whole downtown corridor is a nightmare for bikers. Busy, fast and distracted traffic on one-way streets. There are no safe options: sidewalks are illegal and drivers get mad when you ride in the road but there is no shoulder due to street parking. Fifth and Sixth Ave are particularly bad.

Echo similar comments. This is one of the best north/south routes between the Chester and Campbell Creeks east of the Seward Highway. Crossing Tudor here is quite scary, though and crossing at a light would require biking along Tudor all the way up to Lake Otis or down Tudor all the way to the Seward Highway.

Overpass is rarely swept. Bike infrastructure is great if it is maintained!

  6. April 23 2015

I bike this route frequently and I while the bike may use full lane signs are better than nothing, I think a striped lane would be more appropriate. The biggest pinch points, as noted in another comment are at the traffic calming bumpouts and at the NB intersection with Debarr where there is no room to move right to allow cars to pass as they accelerate out of the intersection.

There is currently a great bike lane headed SB on Mountain View drive that disappears right as the road approaches the 6 land intersection with the Glenn. There needs to be a bike box at the intersection and continue the bike lane through the intersection and onto airport heights to allow connection between the Ship Creek trail and the Chester Creek Trail.

Denali/Eagle Street would be an excellent North/South alternative (or addition to) the C-street striping. It allows almost direct connection to Chester Creek (via a short job on Fireweed) and seems like it could connect to Campbell Creek without substantial changes.

  9. April 23 2015

36th ave is a great east/west route located about halfway between Chester Creek and Campbell Creek. Its biggest flaw is the intersection with the Seward highway where the road expands dramatically and leaves little space for bikes to share the road with vehicles. Developing safe bike access through this intersection should be a critical part of the upcoming 36th redesign.

  10. April 23 2015

Tudor is pretty much a highway at this point with 4 to 8 lanes traveling at 45 to 50 mph. I feel strongly about riding on road but even I would be pretty hesitant to ride on Tudor striped bikes or not. It seems like the money would be better spent developing bike lanes on parallel side streets (which are slim in that area) or consider developing on-road bike lanes on 36th, which provides a good east-west route halfway between Chester Creek and Campbell Creek and allows bikes to avoid the disaster that is N. Lights and Tudor.

    C Street Bike Lane

The PIH appears to show "escape routes" where the on-road stripped lane is shunted onto the sidewalk at almost every intersection. Intersections are where painted and signed bike lanes are most important, allowing bikes to safely continue straight while alerting cars attempting to turn right that they need to cross a bike lane. Crossing intersections on the sidewalk/crosswalk is not safer nor desirable.

  12. April 23 2015

Lake Otis only has one sidewalk through here and it is very narrow. A wider sidewalk and a designated bike lane would make this much safer. Cars are too focused on merging together to notice bikes in traffic.

  13. April 23 2015

The trail ends here without any indication of where to go for the next leg. Any sort of signage would help.

  14. April 23 2015

The trail here is a joke. If there are two people, one has to completely stop to let the other pass.

  15. April 23 2015

I second the other comment here. Putting a stop sign at the bottom of a hill ruins the idea of making it 'bicycle friendly'. We need to conserve our momentum from the flats to make it more easily up the hills and we need the hill to have room to slow down so the path is useful in icy/wet conditions.

  16. April 23 2015

This should continue all the way to the trail that parallels Tudor by the colleges. I commute from Lake Otis to the airport sometimes and it can be a nightmare with traffic not paying attention.

  17. April 23 2015

Tudor would be nice to have as a usable bike-route, but it needs MUCH more than just shoulder striping.

  18. April 23 2015

There needs to be a yellow center line along this hill. In the summer, large groups of tourists ride two and three abreast, blocking the path for riders coming down the hill.

  19. April 23 2015

I have been hit at this intersection. Drivers use the bike lane as a turn lane constantly. Adding those orange sticks with rubber bases (the permanent kind) would eliminate this issue.

  20. April 23 2015

The nearest trail entrance is in the parking lot several hundred feet to the East. Riders coming from Postmark drive often turn right onto Point Woronzof Rd. Adding a trail entrance that connects to the intersection would reduce bicycle traffic on the shoulderless S-curves of the road and encourage more use of the Coastal trail.

  21. April 23 2015

There are several deep cracks in the trail here. If someone catches a wheel in it, they can be pulled into oncoming pedestrians or wreck.

The trail that connects here is falling apart due to root damage and frost heaves.

The hill on E St is constantly covered in sand and gravel and lacks a clean transition from the Chest Creek Trail to the road. A wider shoulder or an actual path would make this safer for drivers and riders alike.

  24. April 23 2015

It would be great to use the far North roads of Mountain View, starting at Lions Park to the Ship Creek trail as Shared Roads. It would encourage cyclists to ride the perimeter of Mountain View. I don't mind riding through MT View, but I know cyclists like to blow through stop signs, and a lot of the intersections have blocked visibility. Riding the perimeter would increase safety for cyclists, and offer a link between the Glen Highway trail with Ship Creek.

The trials throughout South Russian Jack Park are deteriorating. The spot marked has big lumps just over the bridge at the bottom of a big hill. It al least needs to be marked, to alert riders, and then fixed.
