Can the old Ballaine Road bike trail thru Goldstream Valley be repaired and maintained? The present situation--rather narrow shoulders with lots of gravel and car/truck drivers' disregard for the speed limit--is an accident waiting to happen. There are lots of summer commuters on Ballaine and more than just a few winter commuters. FNSB needs a better plan for bike traffic on Ballaine Road.

UAF's winter maintenance ends here, but has high winter usage. If continued along Farmer's Loop, it opens up a lot of the population to winter commuting.

  3. May 24 2011

This entire area is a disaster and needs immediate attention before someone is killed. Bikers have a responsibility for safety, but the layout in this area doesn't allow for safe commuting.

  4. May 24 2011

A path along Old Steese would alleviate traffic on the Steese.

  5. May 24 2011

The sidewalk system in this area is a joke. There are too many competing interests - school kids, MAC, pedestrians, bikes, etc to be competing for limited sidewalk and terrible on/off ramps. The area is a corridor to shopping for UAF and needs proper infrastructure to support it.

  6. May 24 2011

The bridge over the slough is dangerous on the road or sidewalk.

  7. May 24 2011

Constant 4-wheeler traffic throws gravel and the path is never cleaned. There is no way for the State to Police the 4-wheelers, so paths should be made with only bikes in mind - i.e. bikes lanes on roads where they can be swept and maintained at the same time.

  8. May 24 2011

This area is covered in gravel. The multiple merging lanes and traffic from behind you in every case make it very dangerous.

  9. May 24 2011

As a pedestrian coming up the hill from University, crossing through this intersection is the most confusing, unsafe place in town. The sidewalk ends and you have to get through three lanes of traffic to get back on a sidewalk. With dogs this is a dangerous spot as there's only a tiny island between two lanes.

  10. May 24 2011

Davis is a great, safe alternative to commuting on the Mitchell - except I have to ride in the drive lane due to heavy gravel on the south side shoulder.

  11. May 24 2011

The bike trail on the west side of the underpass is badly broken up and scary for any bike with narrow tires.

  12. May 23 2011

Dido to the above comment. Clear the paths in the winter. We can make all these nice trails, but news flash Fairbanks, we have rather long winters up here, often times the bike paths are unavailable for more than half the year if they are not plowed, which means for that half year+ those users default to using the main road surface. I know I do for most of my winter bike commuting.

  13. May 23 2011

Can the bike path be plowed in the winter? I am a year-round bike commuter and avoid this trail in the winter because it sucks to ride on and because snowmachines drag race up and down it. I've seen machines doing 60+ mph here. Is there any way we can enforce the non-motorized aspect of this trail?

  14. May 23 2011

This entire corner of town is a dangerous joke for everyone, but especially walkers and bikers. No sidewalks, no lights, no shoulders, large parking lots, confusing intersections, nothing but a mess. If there is one thing this country does well, its designing box stores and parking lots to be as unfriendly to pedestrians and cyclists as theoretically and realistically possible. I guess they realize that the few remaining Americans who aren't fat and lazy will not actually bike or walk to their stores, so why bother designing roads and parking lots for anything besides vehicular traffic.

  15. May 23 2011

The entire length of Chena Ridge Road needs a bike path along it. It is extremely dangerous to ride or walk on this road because of the narrow shoulders, heavy traffic, and the short sight distance around curves.

  16. May 23 2011

College Rd in general is difficult to bike on. Yes there are sidewalks, but car rarely look to see bikers on the sidewalks. It is also very difficult to cross the road except at the 2 or 3 crossings. Trying to get from Gullivers or Hot Licks to Beaver Sports, or the Marlin or Thai restaurant? Or the other way to go do some laundry or hit any number of the businesses down there? Good luck!! A busy 4 lane "highway." Better get in your car and drive the 50 feet. Welcome to America!! We can't walk anywhere now because we're so fat and lazy and design roads ONLY for vehicular traffic.

  17. May 23 2011

Biking along Cushman is horrendous! The sidewalks are cracked, treacherous, and drop off sharply at each crossing, and the street runs right next to the sidewalk so it's hard to ride a bike in the road.

  18. May 23 2011

Please widen this road or do something. Popular road for walking and biking.

  19. May 23 2011

Side walks ends in this area leaving a gap up to Cowles

  20. May 23 2011

This is a busy and popular road for bikers and walker going to UAF, Goldstream Valley, to town or anywhere on that side of town. There is no sidewalk or bike path and hardly even a shoulder. A good system or paths or at least painted bike lanes would make everyone safer and happier. And can we please clean up the gravel on the sides of the roads?

  21. May 23 2011

Horrible chip seal here. It's bad in many places along this road, but worst here. Why bother spending any amount of money and time in laying down chip seal when it sucks so bad, everyone hates it, and it doesn't last very long?

  22. May 23 2011

What's up with the path here? It turns abruptly into the road at each road and street crossing, rather than transition smoothly into these crossings. This hold true for many of the sidewalks in this town.

  23. May 23 2011

One of the most dangerous bridges in this town. Very narrow sidewalks adjacent to a busy and fast road. Sidewalks on the bridge are rarely plowed in the winter, making them even more dangerous.

  24. May 23 2011

This bike is great overall, though there is still much for improvement is safety and quality of the path. The bridge abutments are rough and hard on bikes. Also, the bridge is very dangerous in the winter because 1) it is not plowed, and then 2) snowmachiners ride on it and shape the snow into a hard packed slope where it becomes near impossible to bike on and dangerous at best to even walk. Like mentioned for other areas, why can't we enforce the non-motorized signs on this path? Snowmachines and 4-wheelers can go virtually everywhere they want in this state, can't we have a few paths and trails that are non-motorized?

  25. May 23 2011

The length of the Old Steese from College to the Jo is horrible for biking or walking. There is only a sidewalk on one side. There are a lot of businesses in this area. Better sidewalks or paths so bikers and pedestrians can get around safely on this busy street.
