The intersection of Kelly Avenue and Hwy 1 is one of the most highly used intersections by Cabrillo Unified School District students. It is less than half a mile from 3 schools and a mile from Half Moon Bay High School. The crosswalks are long and the pork chop island and right turn lane is not safe for pedestrians/bicyclists using the crosswalk. We would like yellow high-visibility crosswalks, curb extensions to shorten crosswalks and protected bike lanes.

The eastern (or northeastern?) crosswalk for Trousdale and El Camino is actually at Trousdale and Irwin, where there are no pedestrian signals. It's unclear when it is safe to cross, or when cars may be turning left onto Trousdale from El Camino. Please add a pedestrian signal to increase safety for pedestrians walking from doctors offices to Millbrae transit center.

Cars speed down Sheffield, take sharp turns onto Lake Vista and speed down the street heading to the elementary school for drop-off and pick-up. Traffic calming (stop sign at Lake Vista and Sheffield, speed bumps on both streets) should be added to protect residents.

SMC promised a Roundabout here for residents of Seal Cove & Pillar Ridge plus SMC Parks attractions of the bluff trail & Fitzgerald Marine Reserve to be paid by Developer of the Big Wave Office Park but there have been two accidents at this intersection just on the Labor Day weekend 2023. There is no northbound acceleration lane for cars entering the highway from the west and traffic is 50 mph on HWY One. Harald Hermann was killed in his bicycle in Sept 2022 when a box truck crossed over the line and hit him on the shoulder of the roadway.

I don’t believe there is ample room to move the parking lot to tge westside, but l also don’t think that is the highest and best use of money when the Moss Beach Corridor needs better highway lighting and at least one roundabout at Cypress and Highway One. I have lived on the Coast over 35 years and do not recall any road-related fatalities at Gray Whale Cove. That is a State Beach and a tourist location so the money should be spent in the unincorporated SMC populated areas NOT for Jay-walkung Tourists crossing to go to a State Beach!!!
Like Liked 0 timesAgreed. All talk and no action on the round abouts. The left turns on HWY 1 in Moss Beach need to be addressed. HWY 1 traffic here often moves at freeway speeds. Unsafe for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.
Like Liked 1 timeWith the awesome park nearby, moss beach is attracting more families, it would be nice if crossing the 1 was less hectic.
If there were a traffic light, or walking path it'd be really nice. The flags put there by the community area great but cars don't always see (or stop) when waving them.

In the 30+ years that I have lived on the Coastside and driven Hwy 1 between Montara and Pacifica frequently, I have witnessed many close calls where a car stopped for pedestrians at Gray Whale Cove or pedestrians darted out across the hwy, forcing drivers to slam on their brakes. A tragedy at this location is inevitable. There is a way to fix this. The road and the parking lot could be swapped so that the parking lot is on the west side of the hwy. This would involve slowing the speed limit dramatically to accommodate the curve but in the end, lives would be saved.

As a Montara resident that regularly drives this route on busy weekends, I am very concerned about the pedestrians trying to cross from the parking lot to Grey Whale Cove beach. At times there are cars parked along the roadway and many pedestrians trying to cross. I agree that the speed limit should be reduced in this area and other safety features should be implemented. Drivers who don't know this area come around the curve and are surprised to find pedestrians crossing. It is dangerous!
Like Liked 1 timeAgreed. There should be some sort of speed decreasing measure here or the state needs to build a pedestrian tunnel under the roadway. No residential area here, install rumble strips at a minimum.

Impossible to safely cross Rt 1 on foot/ bike from Miramar neighborhood (near Medio) without walking far north or south to traffic lights. Waiting for pause in traffic risks drivers stopping to allow one to cross, only to have oncoming drivers behind them roar around stopped car, endangering pedestrians. Near misses witnessed frequently at Medio & Rt 1! Please consider several roundabouts along Rt 1 north of HMB. As a Senior driver, I'm often unable to enter Rt 1 from east Miramar (near Medio) turning south. Must go north, and do a U turn, also not very safe nor efficient.

Pedestrains block the sidewalks (waiting for restaurants )pushing other pedestrians into the street, cyclist are forced to use a narrow street where cars are going 25 MPH and trying to squeeze past pedestrians spilling into the street and cyclists stuck in the a narrow lane. This route is also lined with bars and distillery, which you have drivers who probably have been drinking

The roadway through Princeton Harbor Area (Capistrano) has no bicycle lane and the cyclists ride on the sidewalks. There was a stabbing in front of Barbara’s Fishtrap when a cyclist politely asked a restaurant patron out front waiting for a table to let them pass by on the sidewalk, because there was no safe place to ride in the street at that location.

Very dangerous, school children are dropped off by samtrans with no cross walk to get home, they have to jaywalk against busy rush hour traffic going 50 MPH to get home. We have children coming from elementry, junior high and high school. The road is also at a slight incline where cars are unaware of pedestrian traffic

Medio area in Miramar would be an excellent location for a roundabout or a pedestrian under/over-pass.
Like Liked 4 timesAgree! Round-a-bouts keep traffic moving (as opposed to traffic signals). Pedestrians and cyclists benefit too, because car speeds are reduced at roundabouts!
Like Liked 2 timesYes, roundabouts! And a catwalk at this location would be great! So many accident, near misses, even deaths at Highway One and Medio. Turning left to southbound 1 from Medio east is taking your life into your hands.
Like Liked 1 timeNine times out of ten I have to turn right to turn left. I’ve had so many near misses trying to turn left on one.
Like Liked 1 timeHighway 1 and Medio is an incredibly dangerous area for all pedestrians. I’m not sure how many accidents and deaths need to happen before safety is put first for our community but I bet there will be more before avoidable tragedies here before anything changes for the better.
The entire corridor from the intersection of Hwy 1 and Capistrano to the light at Frenchman’s Creek needs a reduced speed limit for starters. We have two elementary schools and numerous businesses along this stretch where people are needed to cross the highway and risking their lives to do so. And the incomplete bike path on the east side where county and city borders meet forces pedestrians onto the highway to connect to the rest of the bike path. Roundabouts and over/under-passes would be an amazing addition to help keep our community safe while also keeping traffic flowing through our highly trafficked town.
Maybe this isn’t a question for you but it’s an important one to take into consideration for road safety. Why aren’t all bus stops accompanied with safe crossing areas for pedestrians? There are at least five bus stops from Terrace Ave to Medio Ave and not one has a crosswalk or any safe way to cross the road.
As for leaving east Miramar from Medio or Furtado, you are often forced to either turn right to eventually go left or roll the dice and hope someone driving at least 50mph will slow down to let you onto the highway. The turning lane we once had helped a little to get across half the road, but after the pedestrian bridge at Miranda was shut down with no notice forcing more people onto the shoulder of south bound Hwy 1, CalTrans created a temporary barrier on the highway and changed the lane markers so we no longer have that option.
Hot mess of an intersection and corridor!

You see many cyclist and pedestrians on this road with no where to walk or ride. You have bus stops that drop people off with no where to walk to.
proper paths for pedestrians would help
on 84 they have pop-out lanes for cyclist which may help as well

It us difficult to see what part of HWY 92 this comment refers to, but more would walk or bike to school if there was a safe way to do so.

Unfortunately HMB us broke and never addresses ANY traffic issues. -
A three-way stop at Crestview and Melendy is really needed. It is almost impossible to see the speeding traffic coming both ways on Crestview when trying to make a left turn from Melendy. Pedestrians, including children catching the bus to school also have great trouble crossing here.

Blind connection of bike path to street. In order to yield the path to pedestrians, many cyclists use this point to shift from path to street. However - even with the beg button in use, I have nearly been hit a few times because the shrubbery obscures a view of pedestrians and cyclists. And the shrubbery equally obscures a view of oncoming cars.

The map shows the entire Holly St in orange which indicates it is already known to be a motor vehicle high injury network. The difference between this street and many streets with the same color is that the street is also fully residential on both sides. Thus, it requires some creative thinking address the safety concerns of its residents and balance that with the utility of the road as an entry/exit point between HW 101 into San Carlos / Caltrain. Funds from LRSP would help in adding more caution signs (for speed limits, speed-o-meters), bike lanes, and beautification (!). This will discourage heavy vehicles from passing, help enforce speed limits and create awareness among drivers. I am sure LRSP and the city council and San Mateo county authorities can use the funds effectively towards improving safety on Holly, and thereby the larger city and county.

Several problems at 101 South Exit at Millbrae Avenue: People don't heed the "lane ending" markers and speed ahead in the far right "ending" lane; once you make it to the exit - the 2 right turn lanes need better markers - people get confused and drift across lanes and are generally going too fast for conditions.

Sidewalk at Surfer's Beach is 1/2 gone, damaged in the 2023 winter storms. This cuts the walking path used heavily by peds and cyclists in half.

Agree. Why has this not been repaired? It was damaged in the storm of Dec 2023/Jan 2023!!!

We know that HMBay is broke, but this is “their” side of Highway One!Curious about this as well. Why has there been no repair attempt here? There has been a construction crew shaping and reinforcing the jetty and paving the path for the new restroom with all of the necessary equipment sitting 50 yards away for the last year and still going. Seems to me there could be some sense in contrating them for the fill and repair on the path here.
Like Liked 1 timeThat side of Highway One at “Surfer’s Beach” (west side) is under the the control of the City of HMB while the east side is County. Maybe it’s not repaired 10 Months after the storm damage us because HMB us broke or they have not pestered CalTrans to fix it.
Like Liked 0 times+1 this needs repairing and the sea wall needs to be re-inforced else we will loose highway one sooner rather than later!
