Dangerous to bike due to fast traffic from multiple highway off-ramps. There is space for buffered bike lanes with flex posts. Also space for a multi-use path from Franklin Dr to Rockingham to connect the school to neighborhoods to the North and the bike bridge, to replace the crumbling sidewalk.

There should be a sidewalk on both sides of Woodbury, people are always rushing across the road and cars drive way too fast down this section. With the new homes going on and the elderly residents in the apartment buildings there should really be proper sidewalk in place here to connect to the cottage st. sidewalk.

Sheffield is a great connection between Middle and new bicycle path. Only needs signage. Like many secondary roads in the city, all bicycles need is direction via signs or road markings to let them know how to get from point to point.

This is a huge impediment to getting around town via bicycle. Very unsafe and new road won’t slow down traffic. Need separated bike path.

cars, bikes, and pedestriansThe preliminary plans of the reconstruction (dated Sept 8 2021) only show the multiuse path between Banfield and Middle Roads. Are there plans to extend it all the way to Rt 1 for connectivity? Are there future plans to remove the slip lane turning onto Banfield?

The planned elwyn road side walk should be extended to Oakwood and Regina. The houses on oakwood drive are landlocked becuase elwyn road is too dangerous to walk or bike on. A sidewalk on one side of the road should be extended to these neighborhoods to connect them to UFC and the route 1 commercial district.

this road narrows at the top of the hill so bicycles have to move into the road. impatient drivers frequently pass bikes in both directions within inches of a bike making a very dangerous situation for bikers.

Sagamore Avenue is a popular cycling route connecting Portsmouth with the Seacoast to the South. The section in front of Luster King is particularly hazardous as the road narrows and the shoulder is virtually nonexistent. Drivers in either direction cannot see one another due to the crest of the hill. Consequently, drivers should slow down until they can pass a cyclist safely, but many are impatient and do not provide the 3 feet of distance required by state law. The proposed redevelopment of the Luster King property and the removal of the broad Luster King curb cut will magnify the risk to cyclists.

I have noticed that drivers turning left onto Maplewood can have a green light while pedestrians crossing Maplewopod may also have a green light. This doesn't make sense.

You are correct. The Islington, Middle, Congress, Maplewood intersection is a traffic engineering nightmare. Especially for pedestrians. Prior to July 2020, the signal operations were set up to maximize pedestrian safety by stopping all traffic in all directions at the same time to allow pedestrians to cross straight across or diagonally in all directions. The current signal operations are car centric in that they favor speed and mobility of cars over the safety and comfort of pedestrians. The big painted pedestrian "X" crosswalk in the middle of the intersection needs to return. The City should have left well enough alone. Why was the signal operation changed in July 2020???
Like Liked 3 timesMy experience here is similar. It is a busy intersection, especially in the summer with people crossing to the historical society and the parking lots. It feels like a very long wait for pedestrians and a dangerous crossing. Pedestrian crossing could be given greater priority in the sequence of the lights.

A high percentage of vehicles exiting on exit 7 southbound and turning right onto Market St have a complete disregard for the stoplight. Drivers look left to see if car are coming from that direction and then proceed past the red light and "No right turn on red" sign. Often drivers do not even slow down. Waiting for a pedestrian crossing light makes no difference.

The bike lane needs to be continuous past this stretch of road to provide access to Spinnaker Point, market basket, and additional shopping.

This road to Newcastle needs bike lanes/sidewalks, not just (useless) signs about sharing the road.

NH 1-B from Pleasant Point Drive to New Castle is a NHDOT owned and maintained road. Plus, all the enviros would go ape bleep if you tried to place fill in sensitive marine wetlands necessary to widen the road for sidewalks or bike lanes.

An incredible asset to Portsmouth Cyclists, however the pavement needs addressing especially on Ashland RD.

I want to add that I absolutely rely on this route to get to work on Pease. I really hope it will be well maintained. The old road is showing many cracks which makes for a bumpy ride. That said it’s my favorite part of my commute as it’s so peaceful and stress free
Like Liked 1 timeThis is a Portsmouth Gem, but it's a HIDDEN gem. Some signage showing that this is the safe way to access Pease and Newington would be great.
