Comments for “Ardmore Master Plan”

This intersection is dangerous because many do not stop at the stop sign. Also, traffic gets backed up from the light on Lancaster Ave. A potential solution is making Church Road and Anderson Ave both one way in separate directions. Anderson is also dangerous (try to make a left our of Coulter or the Suburban Square parking lot onto Anderson).

As Ardmore grows, something should be done for residents who live along the tracks to deal with noise from the trains and encroaching vegetation like bamboo. The trains are sounding their horns more frequently (ask the residents who have been complaining along the new Wawa line). And the bamboo that this growing along the tracks is making its way into neighborhoods and parks. A solution to both may involve construction along the property line that will stop the advancement of invasive plants like bamboo and reduce train noise.

It's unfortunate that the new VW dealership was allowed to build so close to the Church Street bridge. There is barely a foot of clearance between the building and the bridge. Now the bridge can not be widened in that direction. The single, narrow sidewalk is not adequate for the amount of foot traffic on the bridge. The bridge isn't wide enough for the amount of vehicles either. A turn lane is needed.

Others have commented about the challenges with Montgomery Avenue. It is not currently functioning well at moving cars efficiently OR at moving pedestrians safely. It does not seem possible for it to do both well, and it seems the preferred direction for the future is to improve and prioritize safety for pedestrians and cyclists. To do this, I agree with other comments about reducing the number of lanes. Drivers will always go as fast as the road allows them, so the road needs to change to force slower driving. A median of trees and increasing width of the verge between the sidewalk and the street would help make walking safer and more pleasant while slowing vehicles. Cutouts of the median to allow for turn lanes will also help prevent vehicle backups. Similar conditions used to exist, in Bryn Mawr at least (the link is to a historic image of Montgomery Avenue, when it appeared much more like a leafy boulevard): https://lowermerionhistory.org/?page_id=188754.
I disagree with the comment that reducing lanes on Montgomery will force speeding traffic into the surrounding neighborhoods. There is not a direct route through North Ardmore that would save drivers any time regardless of the speed they drove. It is possible that more cars would then go through downtown Ardmore on Lancaster, where as a state road, only limited interventions can be made. However, the interventions suggested in the AMP should discourage speeding on Lancaster.
More information is needed on the cause of congestion and speeding on Montgomery and Lancaster--residents or through-commuters? Residents can adapt to the road to drive more slowly and through commuters will take another route to their final destination if Lancaster and Montgomery are both modified.

The sidewalk here is very narrow and extremely dangerous. This has been brought to LMT's attention repeatedly and needs to be addressed asap, before someone is killed, please! LMHS students and others use this pedestrian route all the time.

The faux brick crosswalk here that matches the adjacent condo building is a shameful depiction of the control that developers have in Ardmore. There is an opportunity here to create a real "gateway treatment" that indicates to drivers that there is a separation here between the main dragway of Montgomery Ave. and the peaceful, vibrant neighborhood with stunning impeccably maintained historic homes beyond. One of LM's finest residential neighborhoods, should be properly protected and not an advertisement for developer control in LM.

Please enforce the 25 mph speed limit. Ticket drivers incessantly until they slow down. It's very dangerous.

Commenting on the adjacent suggestion for a "road diet" on Montgomery Ave. by reducing 4 lanes to 3 - this will inevitably cause frustrated drivers to leave the main road and take short cuts through residential neighborhoods. Our neighborhoods along Montgomery are worth preserving! Lower Merion's beautiful, historic, peaceful neighborhoods are the benchmark of this desirable suburban township. Find another way to assure pedestrian safety and bike routes please.

This light needs to be safer for pedestrians crossing here. I run here and am unable to cross Montgomery Ave. from in front of the school to Church Rd. The lights are timed so it's impossible. As soon as the traffic on Montgomery stops the traffic on Church Road starts. I always press the walk button and I still have yet for it to light up/work for me.

This is the main way students from the High School walk to Suburban Square. We need to make it safe for them to walk there. All the students need to be safe along with a pedestrian light for them to easily cross at this intersection

This intersection is an absolute disaster! and an accident waiting to happen for pedestrians and cars alike!! It's impossible to cross as a pedestrian. And impossible to make a left from Coulter Street. It's a huge traffic jam. This intersection needs to be studied and we need a solution.

This intersection needs to be more pedestrian friendly. Most students from the High School cross at this intersection to walk to Suburban Square. Maybe a flashing pedestrian walkway??

This intersection needs to be more pedestrian friendly. This intersection needs to be more pedestrian friendly. Can the light be timed to allow the pedestrians more time to walk across the intersection? The benefit to this would be to also slow down traffic on Montgomery Ave.

This intersection needs to be more pedestrian friendly. Can the light be timed to allow the pedestrians more time to walk across the intersection? The walking signal should always be shown. The benefit to this would be to also slow down traffic on Montgomery Ave.

The community members who walk in this area, including the intersections of Coulter and Anderson and Montgomery and Anderson, should not have to wait for an injury-causing or fatal accident before our Township officials fix the problems here. The Township currently appears to be relying on driver confusion to force drivers to go slowly (which the Township then sees as making it a safe area). This is flawed thinking and a bad policy--why have any traffic mitigation measures anywhere if a viable solution is to cause driver confusion? Merely because a terrible accident has not occurred does not mean there is no problem. Drivers are becoming more and more aggressive here because it is a frustrating place to drive through. Please proactively fix this intersection and don't wait for one of us to be injured first.

Consider making Anderson Avenue one-way. Woodside Road could be one-way in the opposite direction. Could Coulter Avenue be pedestrian only between Anderson and St. James place?

The underpass has one extremely narrow sidewalk that is definitely not ADA accessible. If the underpass can't be widened, please consider making Woodside one-way and make Anderson one-way the opposite direction. We need to be creative to fix the traffic snares both on Woodside and Anderson.

The west-bound sidewalk here is dangerous, with cars picking up speed coming down the hill, no real curb (the sidewalk is street level for a half-block) and a tight fit between the wall/trees & the road. A new curb would do a lot to make this feel safer!

There should be some sort of demarcation across Llanfair Road along Montgomery to indicate that you are entering a neighborhood - perhaps Belgian blocks, pavers or carved bricks like they have at the entrace of many driveways including at the new apt building, 100 St Georges. Almost like a raised cross walk.
